The executive committee says the new contest will broaden interest in The Festival. Queen candidates sponsored in communities will share 3600 ticket holders daily awaiting race results. Winners are paid by the Festival Association, which will cover all travel expenses for the Queen.
Festival executives outlined a busy schedule including a daylight parade on Friday, a crowning ceremony at the Ice Palace, and a Jam Pail Bonspiel for grades one through six. Additions include a Mukluk-A-Go-Go for teens, enhanced decor, a fog of races, beard competition, a stage show, and expanded Indian arts exhibits.
Hon. Gurney Evans announced the first deep off shore test well for oil and gas in Manitoba's Churchill region will be spudded before month end. Aquitaine Kas kattama No. 1 will drill in the Kaskattama River delta about 160 miles southeast of Churchill to 4500 feet. The $300000 project is part of a farm out with Sogepet Limited, Bralorne Petroleums Limited and Banff Oil Limited as operator, covering nearly a million acres under Manitoba and federal permits.
