Town Council last week opened tenders for a new paddy wagon and accepted one. Finance committee had rejected repair bills totaling about 290 dollars, with 250 dollars for paddy wagon repairs. Councillor Sokulski urged returning bills to merchants, noting the need to keep the present vehicle in repair while delaying the new paddy wagon.
The annual Student Class room Allotment will be published in the September 1 issue of The Pas Herald. Registered students names with their teachers and assigned room will appear in that issue. School opens on September.
Town council examined temporary trailer licenses, targeting owners around Timberland Trailer Court five miles south of The Pas. Councillor Doug McBride urged notices be served to trailer owners to move, following Mayor Trager’s disclosure of a provincial lease termination affecting the DREE trailer on Fischer Avenue.
The hospital unveils a new 2 million dollar wing with three floors and joining entrances. Opening day events start at 10 30 am with public tours from 2 4 pm and 7 8 pm. coffee served. Parking is available across from the Sacred Heart grounds.
Allan Harris, 26, held by RCM Police charged with manslaughter in the death of 52 year old Robert Bignell at Big Eddy Reserve last Thursday. Bignell was found at Harris’ father John William Harris home around 6:30 pm. Medical examiner Dr Ron Templeton cites severe head injuries. Harris appeared in court and is remanded to Magister’s Court August 25. Police indicate a drinking party was involved. no inquest ordered.
Irvin Petersen age 49 and his 22 year old son Steve from near Minneapolis won the 1000 prize in Opasquia Indian Days World Longest Canoe Race no portage four day event. They completed 140 miles in 16 hours 20 minutes 33 seconds with a best lap of 5 hours 15 minutes 4 seconds. Second place went to Claude Corbin and Luke Robillard from Cap de la Madelaine Quebec.
The Pas and District Horticultural Society held its annual show at Guy Hall on August 18 with 205 exhibits and 188 visitors. G. Smith topped the home grounds competition, winning the Davidson Trophy and Chamber of Commerce grand aggregate trophy plus the most points in Class 2 bowls and containers. Eric Batchelor was runner up in home grounds and nearly swept Class 1 Cut Flowers.
Norman Chagnon altered his plea from guilty to not guilty in a shooting incident at Halfway Camp on August 8. Co defendant Rejean Beaulieu kept his guilty plea to possession of a restricted weapon and was remanded for sentence. Crown prosecutor questioned why the change was allowed mid discussion. At last week's regular Council meeting concern focused on starting Contract B of the storm sewer project in the fall. Councillor Doug McBride warned the paving program may be disrupted next summer and pressed for assurance that the DREE agreement for 1971-72 is moving toward finalization. A company note said if work could begin by August 25 they could finish by freeze-up with no payment until December 15, 1971.
