Three fires in early Friday hours caused about 35000 dollars damage to the general office and staff areas of Margaret Barbour Collegiate in The Pas Manitoba. Police noted foul play after a window at the front of the building was found damaged and firefighters quelled blazes with minutes of arrival.
In The Pas, about 67 youths say a drop-in centre is essential for youth needs. The group, calling itself the youth club of The Pas, asks for a permanent location to continue through the school year after the curling rink lounge centre faced initial criticism by Town Council and others.
St Anthony's Hospital will officially open the new two million dollar wing next Thursday August 26, adding obstetrics pediatrics maternity operating rooms x ray and lab facilities across three floors. Opasquia Indian Days run August 18 to 21 with opening ceremonies at 6:00 PM at Dick Bell Park Pike Lake. Chief Gordon Lathlin fires the flaming arrow as Prairie Troupe Indian Dancers perform each night before cabarets at Matrix Hall. The four day event features a 120 mile world championship canoe race, 40 miles daily for three days, starting Thursday morning.
RCMP Rural Detachment Constables Knight and a second officer pursued a speeding car returning from an Atik incident. The vehicle allegedly exceeded 60 mph and a dangerous chase ensued, raising the risk of a serious crash.
Concern grows over a form of pollution in Clearwater Lake near the north shore where a foamy grey substance has been observed by picnickers across the lake. Samples were sent to Winnipeg for analysis by the Department of Mines and Resources but no report has been received by The Pas. Government officials from Mines and Resources and the Health Branch confirm the presence of something unusual and expect results from the tests.
Jack Giles of Kelsey School Division said custodians had most items ready for the September 7 opening with rooms cleaned floors waxed and fixtures cleaned. He lamented the backlog saying cleanup will require Winnipeg crew to finish and finish soon.
In Mag istrate's Court last Wednesday Norman Chagnon pleaded guilty to dangerous use of a firearm and Rejean Beaulieu faced a charge of possession of a restricted weapon. The pair, apprehended August 10 in Cranberry Portage, fired at Henry Janveaux, production foreman at Churchill Forest Industries Woodlands Division Halfway Camp, narrowly missing his head.
After a little over two decades, a new highway linking The Pas to Shoal Lake Red Earth and Nipawin Saskatchewan finally opened last Sunday.
