Honorable Jean Chretien opened the Silver Bridge Community Hall on Big Eddy Indian Reserve on August 10. He praised Indigenous self help and urged united federal provincial and local efforts for rapid development during the ribbon cutting at the new community hall five miles north of The Pas. Ron Berzinski won the bathtub race on Clearwater Lake after a March idea by Track n' Trail Snowtmiabile Club. The quirky contest drew 14 entries with tubs on inner tubes plywood sheets and skies, ages 15 to 55, on a calm rainless day.

Pfau Awarded Scholarship for Winnipeg Study
David Pfau of The Pas and 1912 Margaret Barbour graduate has accepted a Board of Regents Scholarship worth 500 for studies at the University of Winnipeg starting September 1912. Earlier he won the Town of The Pas Scholarship and the M B C I award and plans arts and science studies at the University of Manitoba this fall.

Body Found in Shed Behind Revelstoke Lumber
A middle aged man was found dead in a shed behind Revelstoke Lumber early Friday. Police reported the informer’s name not released pending kin notification. The body was found at 3 a.m. with the cause of death unknown and a post mortem planned in Winnipeg as investigation continues.

Bud Simpson Announces His Retirement
Robert Bud Simpson Conservative MP for Churchill retires from federal politics. He will not seek the Conservative nomination next election. Old Timers Honored At Dinner In The Pas Rotary

Extra School Costs in UK Tenders Accepted
The Public Schools Finance Board accepted Graham Construction’s tender to complete Mary Duncan School and to build Scott Bateman Junior High in Kelsey School Division. Construction began at Mary Duncan immediately with Scott Bateman set to start by August 21. Tenders opened in Winnipeg on August 1, Scott Bateman came in at $220,000 over the estimate of about $1,006,006. Mary Duncan had been partially constructed.

Indian Days End Saturday at Opasquia festival
The annual Opasquia Indian Days run from Monday to Saturday August 19 with events at Dick Bell Park. Notables include New York Ranger Jim Neilson and Miss Friendly Manitoba Jan Walker at the opening. The 120 mile canoe race begins near Bignell Bridge and will be run in three 40 mile laps, with first prize of 31,090 and the Labatt's trophy. Cabaret dances are scheduled for tonight and Friday.
