The eighth annual Rodeo is set for August 5 and 6 at the Exhibition Grounds with a monster parade starting Monday at 11 a.m. Organizers seek float volunteers via John Bodnar. About seventy-five teams will compete in twenty four chuck wagon and chariot races over two days, with prize money and ribbons for each heat and a trophy for the best overall time.
The parade assembles at KCC at 10 00 a m on Monday August 7 and departs at 11 00 a m following Seventh Street Gordon Avenue Fischer Avenue Third Street Cook Avenue First Street Fischer Avenue and a final turn toward the Exhibition Grounds near the Exhibition Grounds
Ian Alexander elected by acclamation to The Pas Town Council becomes the youngest member at 21. Nominations to fill Fasano’s vacancy closed July 24 after Fasano resigned July 9. Alexander, an accountant at CFI, will attend the next regular meeting on Wednesday August 1. Fasano’s term runs to November 1974.
The Pas hosts the two day event Saturday August 4 and Sunday August 5 with 160 entries from local golfers Thompson Flin Flon and Saskatchewan areas. $1000 in prize money and a colour TV for a hole in one on No 6 attract entries.
MP for Churchill, Taylor, criticizes Transport Minister Marchand for delaying development at Port Churchill Northern Manitoba. He cites rail, deep sea port and airport assets as key to northern growth while Marchand touts studies ahead of action. Government press release notes 12.5 million in six years for port works.
Orson F. Wright Q.C., a pioneer Manitoba lawyer, died suddenly at his Beaver Saskatchewan summer cottage on Friday July 23. He was 70. The funeral was held at Flin Flon on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wright.
Richard Morgan-Smith, 20, faced a motorcycle fire last Tuesday afternoon near Frontier Apartments at 114 Third Street West. At about 5 45 p m he attempted to start a 1961 BSA, gas on, carb primed, two kicks, ignition, flames enveloped the engine. Damages were estimated at 800 dollars. He said the bike had taken a long time to build and much was salvageable only as the front end survived.
The festival's books show a profit of $1000.71, reported by Treasurer Jack Thompson. Although below prior years, profit exceeded expectations as cash prizes for dog team races rose by about $3000 and prizes for other events also increased. The 1973 meeting moves to September from May.
The second annual Bathtub Race drew five entries amid cold, cloudy weather at Clearwater Lake. Doug Sangster won the new cross country leg from Mile 25 to Mile 15 as the only finisher in one hour fifteen minutes, also taking a lap race around Pioneer Bay. He earned $75 plus a trophy for cross country and $30 plus a trophy for the lap race.
The Pas Town Council and Cosol LGD have not agreed on fire protection terms. On March 7 the council gave three readings to agreements with the LGD and The Pas Indian Reserve, proposing a $3,000 annual retainer to the LGD plus pay per call. The LGD Advisory Committee rejected the plan, calling the retainer financially impossible as it would require raising mill rates from 10 to 18 mills, plus a $1,000 separate charge for Wanless chemical protection.
Frank Szadiak aged 27 was ordained at St. Mary’s Church Russell on July 1 becoming The Pas’s first resident Ukrainian priest. A The Pas native since 1949 he studied at Sacred Heart Separate School and St. Vladimir’s College Roblin. He later pursued theology at St Paul University Ottawa and earned a BA in theology. He was ordained deacon in Newark on December 24 1972 and is preparing his first solemn liturgy at Holy Ghost Church The Pas. He will serve as associate pastor at Sts Peter and Paul Church Saskatoon this fall.
Fourteen year old Matthew Paul de Tremaudan, son of Mr and Mrs Andre de Tremaudan, died after his 1973 mini trail bike performing figure 8s on Carrot River road was struck by an east bound Chevrolet driven by Thomas Settee of Prince Albert. RCMP say coroner's inquest decision awaits full police investigation.

The Town Council approved a 118,500 loan from a new Special Municipal Loans Fund to finance sewer water and storm sewers for a new eastern subdivision in The Pas. One to five lot transfers to Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation will support assisted home ownership. most work to occur in winter with partial loan forgiveness. McNichol Construction to handle sub-divisions Wood Acres work starts late August. MHRC lot selections pending.
