River Sawmills Plans Local Hiring Expansion

River Sawmills announces plans to hire and train 150 additional local workers with on the job training. W M Kishpaugh confirms use of Canada Manpower services to recruit indigenous residents from The Pas and notes 65 percent of current hourly staff are Indian descent. He cites a current annual community contribution of about 250000 dollars rising toward 2 million with full production.

Ice Fishing Derby Planned at Clearwater Lake

The Pas Area Wildlife Association hosts an ice fishing derby at Clearwater Lake from 9 30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 12. Headquarters are the Department of Mines and Natural Resources Spawn Camp. Refreshments have a small fee. Contestants should register at the camp for statistics. Prizes include largest Lake Trout by an angler under 16 and a trophy for an angler over 16. Lagoon Tenders Called for Earthwork on New Lagoon

Town Council authorized tenders for the earthwork portion of a proposed lagoon project to Underwood and McLellan. Tenders close April 20 at 2 p.m. A prior special meeting authorized design work up to 10 000 dollars to be included in the 1970 capital budget. A confidential telegram from Premier Ed Schreyer prompted the meeting.

Provincial Badminton Champions Crowned at Winnipeg Meet

Two Margaret Barbour Collegiate teams represented Zone II in the Manitoba provincial playdown held March 30. Kathy Chartrand and Gary Joyal swept the mixed doubles final 15 8 and 15 4 to claim Zone II titles, while Greg Fulmore and Randy Robinson won four of five in boys doubles to also excel.

Town Council Approves $10,000 in Grants

The town council granted $10,000 to local groups at last week’s meeting. Rota-Tel receives $6,000 for the Rotary Club led museum project. Pas Library Board gets $3,000 for operations. Centennial Committee may use up to $1,000. Invoices approved after committee certification.

Building permits issued during March totaled 2,851,500 dollars. The report details permit activity and municipal approvals for construction projects in the month.

Town and Company Negotiate C F 1 Develop Land For Housing

Churchill Forest Industries seeks to develop a new subdivision as its own developer if an agreement with the Town is reached. The company argues the move would lower housing costs for workers while limiting speculation in the area.

Local Woman Hospitalized After Edwards Avenue Fight

A 20 year old local woman Caroline Constant was hospitalized after a fight on Edwards Avenue. Police report minor skull fractures and head lacerations. Three 17 year old girls from The Pas Reserve and Umperville Settlement face assault causing bodily harm charges and will appear in Juvenile Court. RCMP handed the case to the Probation Officer.

Pas Chamber Sponsors History Book On The Pas

The Pas Chamber of Commerce sponsors a 100 page history book as its Centennial project with Sid Wilton as main author. Donations will be acknowledged in the book to help defray publishing costs. Six thousand copies ordered, sale planned for June with chapters on churches schools industry transportation and local history.

L G D Considers 20 Mill Increase to Fund Schools

L G D of Consul reviews a 20.2 mill rise for 1970 to cover Kelsey School Division costs. Administrator Charles Alexander says the levy adds to a total school levy of 59.6 mills on farm and residential properties while the general municipal levy remains at 12.0 mills.
