Over 100 government employees attended a banquet in honor of Ed Lambert and Eric Batchelar. Lambert, a conservation officer since 1942, will retire this fall. Batchelar, Lands Inspector since 1947, retires March 31. Wrist watches were given to both men.
The Pas Indian Band negotiates with the town to hook 75 acres into sewer and water for a trailer court near Ninth Street and the CNR spur line. Chief Gordon Lathlin cites a favourable outlook with plans for about 75 trailers plus road and power work. housing development planned later. Gerald J. Town Council and Edmonton landowner Ralph McMillan met last week over the Bell subdivision housing project. McMillan owns 22 acres in the subdivision and 100 outside town limits, tied to former Kodiak Refineries river lots. The town also holds eight acres within Bell that are already surveyed. Council had planned to push development but faced a setback.
Mr. Mitchell of The Pas Game and Fish Association told northern MLAs Witney and Carroll at a Snow Lake meeting attended by about 50, 10 from The Pas, that pulp mills like Churchill Forest Industries threaten rivers with high Biochemical Oxygen Demand. He noted CFLI would be allowed up to 50 000 pounds daily for 300 ton production, effectively equating to city sewage from a 250 000 population. The gathering discussed flooding South Indian Lake, CFLI operations, and a northern Manitoba national park.
A 16 year old youth involved in a three man assault on Allan Offrey was in custody awaiting sentencing. Judge C K Taylor said a jail stay would impress the seriousness and help prepare a pre sentence report. Wayne Charrtrand and William Carrier, 19 and 18, received six months for assault causing bodily harm.
A six man coroner’s inquest at Lynn Lake found negligence by Canadian National Railway caused the death of Lucille Bighetty, five, from Pukatawagan Indian Reserve. The jury blamed door design and delayed RCMP transmission, and cited intoxicated workers at Pukatawagan as failing to operate a gas car to search.
The Huskies defeated the Altona Maroons in a best of three series, winning 11-3 Saturday and 9-5 Sunday to claim the Manitoba Intermediate A crown. A 2-2 tie after one period preceded a decisive Huskies surge before 497 fans.
The Pas Indian Band and officials from the Associate Medical Clinic announced that starting April 1 all Indians from the Northern Health Region will receive care at the Associate Clinic. Band members were told doctors can confer with specialists, improving service compared with the previous Indian Health Services Clinic. Minor details remain to be resolved.
Dog owners allege in two weeks of complaints that The Town’s tranquilizer gun used by the dog catcher Hubert Alarie caused a dog to die and a purebred labrador shot at Fischer Avenue survived. Owners say families including Mr and Mrs Charlie Smith and John Heuchert report harm and distress from the incident and its aftermath.
Hagborg Construction Limited of The Pas has been awarded the excavation contract for the new rink complex. Hagborg submitted the lowest bid among two tenders, with Fulmore and Herman the other bidder. Councillor Stu Carey, chair of the rink committee, said bids were invited from Watts Brothers, Finnerty, Fulmore and Herman, R. McLean and Hagborg, and that work would begin this week.
The Town of The Pas spent about 4900 on snow removal this winter, per Municipal Superintendent W C Cameron. This is far below 1968 when costs reached 8428 and 1967 figure stood around 4835.
