Announcement by Principal A C Hatch that the building is cleaned and ready for the new term. Lay out shows first to eighth grades start at nine o clock Monday with rooms reused from last year. Registration hours for older grades and fee schedule listed. senior high begins class work Tuesday after fees paid.
A community program organized by the Parent Teachers Association will welcome school personnel next Sunday evening at the tabernacle. Patrons from Parowan and Paragonah are invited. Falapponah participants are asked to assist, promising a mythic reading. The agenda includes orchestra, talks, prayers, quartette, vocal solo, and community singing led by Principal Hatch and others.
Parowan announces three Branch Agriculture College scholarships this winter. Wilburn Taylor earned a stock judging high point winner honor last spring, Hilda Lowder gained a rodeo queen tied scholarship, and Edith Warren received the award after J B Decker vacated it. Grandchildren Wilburn and Edith are two of the winners with Hilda a great grand child. Other Parowan students at B G A include Bessie Morris and Zona Pendleton. George Koenst and wife visit from Long Beach, California, aiding plaster work at Jasper Cartwright’s home on Upper Main Street.
Two women from Republican State headquarters Mrs Ernest Bamberger and Mrs Canton visited Southern Utah last week. They met local leaders to discuss political situation and ways to boost the party ticket and get out the vote. A county convention motion sought naming a county vice chairman to organize county ladies with Amy J Leeleh of Cedar City arranging the visit.
Mrs. Henrietta Scovill Redfield and daughters Lenora and Lottie traveled from Provo to visit the Paramore family. The gathering included tours to Bryce Canyon Cedar Breaks and Zion Canyon, a large reunion social, and poems and reminiscences honoring Mrs. Redfield and Lucius N. Scovill. The party returns to Provo the next day with plans to resume studies and visit a sheep show.
The Farowan Stake held its quarterly conference in Cedar City on Sept 15 and 16 with broad attendance across wards except Harmony. Key leaders from MMI A General Board, Sunday School, Primary, and the Council of the Twelve attended, and the main business covered the new Priesthood MIA plan, the Sunday school reorganization, and Primary work for the coming season. The Cedar First Ward reorganized the Fourth Quorum with Lester W. Pord as President and Don W. Draper and Daniel E. Matheson as counselors. secretary Glenwood Froyd succeeds Lain A. EBytendor. President Wim R. Palmer and several others spoke at sessions, and Thomas J. Jones was absent due to illness, though improving.
A new harmonica band will join the high school music program to boost interest in music. About 100 to 150 students from fifth grade up are expected to join, each needing an instrument for fifty cents plus a small music fee. Enrollment closes after the first week. Mr Engar emphasizes support for school bands and welcomes nonstudents who wish to join. Mr Lollin Orton left for St George to work on the new Lib- (fragment).
Obituary notice reports the deaths of two former Parowan residents in Colorado. Eilen McGregor Smith, sister of Julia M. Lyman, died in early August leaving relatives here. Julia Burton Whitney, born 1860 in Parowan, died August 26 after a seven week illness. Whitney lived in Huntington and Colorado Springs, aided by her daughter Birgs Irene MelIntire, with Mamie Johnson among those at her bedside. Whitney was active in drama and L M I A circles and left poems. She leaves surviving brothers Dr F J Burton, S R Burton, and sister Elenannah M Lyman of Parowan.
Present indications show county party conventions for nominating county officers to be voted on this fall. Democrats have set their convention for the 29th with primaries in Parowan and Faragonah noted elsewhere. Republicans plan to hold their convention around October 2 or 3, with notices and primaries to follow next week. Democrats expect to take the initiative this year, unlike past practice.
D T Barton writes from Provo Utah Sept 17 1928 reporting winter lodging at 377 East North and high renting costs. He notes fruit crops including pears and tomatoes, his mother Eliza J Horton staying with him, and his employment at a steel plant with little spare time. He sends regards to friends and family.
Community voters face county conventions with speculation on nominees for state legislature, two commissioners, and county attorney. Incumbents may seek reelection under Republicans. J. G. Pace appears strong for State Representative, while J. S. Want bury name surfaces for the attorney slot amid party maneuvering.
