Legion Unlimbers Big ins On October 4

An effort to enroll every eligible American Legion member launches Saturday October 4 with two teams led by AC Hatch and Lain Matheson. The drive runs until October 24 to determine a winning team, which will host a party. the losers owe the celebration to the victors. Each canvasser has a roster of members and will collect dues of 5.25. The campaign emphasizes the Legion’s benefits, duties to community, and the national service role, ending with a continued note on Buck Page.

Belated Birth Announcements Reach Patowan Area

In Patowan readers learn of a belated arrival a 10 pound daughter to William M and Mary Dalton of Ogden Utah born early September. Brothers Billie at sea and Malcolm a Weber College student plus 11 year old Linda share joy with grandparents Dan Matheson of St George and Glen Holyoak Scott Orton Parowan. Also reported is Gail born Sept 22 at Iron County Hospital to Scott and Gale Orton with grandparents Glen Holyoak Joseph Holyoak and others. Glenna and baby stay with Glenna’s parents for a few days.

Republican candidates rally in Iron County Utah

In Parowan Iron County Utah Republican candidates including Senator Arthur Watkins and U S House hopeful Douglas Stringfellow addressed a Monday meeting. Watkins defended his six year Senate record while Stringfellow spoke on The Price of Peace and shared World War II Cloak and Dagger experiences. Bulloch Accepts Nomination For County Commissioner Post

Bulloch, a 10 year member of the Iron County Board, accepted the Democratic nomination for a four year county commissioner term on the Iron County Leader ticket. A petition with about 170 Iron County voters' names was filed to place his name on the November ballot. He faces Republican David L. Sargent and Democrat Miles Walker, who won the primary.

A Whitney family group from Parowan visited the Huntington Cemetery in Emery County to locate Francis T. Whitney’s grave, the first white child born in Parowan. They learned a monument purchased 25 years ago was never delivered and plan a permanent marker with an American flag.

Parowan Literary Club Opens Social Evening

The Parowan Literary Club held its opening social Wednesday evening at Mrs John Pendleton s home with club program committee members and hostesses Mrs Pendleton. Fifth Judicial Court Term Postponed to November

The Fifth Judicial District term originally set for Monday in Parowan has been postponed to November 12. County Clerk W. Clair Rowley reports orders received from Judge William L. Hoyt confirm the delay.

Special Deer Permits Available in Districts

Almost half of the special antlerless deer permits were sold the first day they were offered to residents and non residents in the Cottonwood and Parowan hunting districts. About 600 permits offered in each writ with sales continuing through the hunting season. Officials remind hunters that the regular license remains valid and the special permit cannot be used on the first day. Permits are sold at the County Court House offices.

Fishermen Injured In Parowan Road Crash

Bryce Adams and Jack Melton Jr of Parowan sustained injuries when their Ford crashed while descending a dugway between Panguitch Lake and Hore Valley. Adams walked ten miles to summon help. Melton lay in a cool night air for hours. Both were improving at Panguitch Hospital.

Neighbors Stop Kitchen Fire From Burning Home

A pan of burning vegetables left on an electric hot plate started a fire at Orion and Eddie Stevens home Monday morning. Neighbors Gertrude Henson and others quickly acted, keeping damage very slight. Firefighters arrived at 9:20 a.m. and extinguished the blaze with a high pressure hose, checking the attic for remaining sparks.

Personal notes show Don Clinton Lowder leaving for Salt Lake City to enroll in a vocational school. Many Parowan residents and relatives traveled to Salt Lake City and attended the General Conference sessions, with relocations, visits, and family connections across Utah and Nevada noted throughout the week.

Col Bentley Reunites With Wife In Colorado Tour

Mrs Frankie Low Bentley travels to Camp Carson Colorado to meet her husband Corporal Ramon J Bentley discharged after nearly two years of service including Korea. They plan a touring trip through New Mexico Texas Mexico and the Grand Canyon before settling in Nevada.

Mr and Mrs Thomas Bettridge and daughter Barbara of Caliente Nevada visited Parowan on Saturday. Pres and Mrs W Clair Towley went to Logan to see their son Rodney at UAC. He is settled at Ray Watters home with Chad Orion. The Watters family report all well. On the return trip the Rowleys stopped in Brigham City with Fred Peterson, then Salt Lake City business, then American Fork to visit Mrs Flossie Shiner. Mr and Mrs M Howard Ward went to Provo to bring home daughter Marilyn a BYU sophomore. Jean Halterman rode with Garth Whitney to Provo for BYU Thursday. Doylé Rowley now teaches math and science at Monticello High School in San Juan County, staying with Mrs Lavinna Redd.
