Mayor F C Van Buren proclaims Monday November 12 1923 as Armistice Day observance in Parowan City noting the Armistice signing on November 11 1918 and the Local American Legion program. The proclamation urges fitting observance by citizens and bears the city seal.
Local American Legion Post No 20 arranges Armistice Day events for Monday the 12th due to Sunday November 11th. Afternoon program includes singing, prayers, patriotic readings and talks. A patriotic film is planned but may be replaced by another good picture in the Tabernacle followed by a dance at the Opera House.
At a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in the Hyatt, discussion focused on funding for canyon road improvements. Proposals include partnering with Cedar City to raise funds for the loop known as Utah's Rainbow Route, with Cedar City seeking $40,000 and Parowan aiming for $10,000. A committee of L. N. Marsden, J. Clayton Mitchell, and F. J. Ward will meet Cedar City to pursue cooperation and explore all funding sources.
Returns from Cedar City show all Republican nominees elected with Pace as mayor Fuller as long term councilman and Gardner as treasurer each winning by a single vote. Hints of a contest have been heard.
A state committee to run the Christmas seal sale opens in Utah at Thanksgiving. Nephi L. Morris will chair with James H. Wallis as secretary, plus county representatives. The effort, larger than prior years, funds anti tuberculosis work and aims to push for a Utah tuberculosis hospital and state sanatorium funding through the next legislature.
In a quiet election J Clayton Mitchell, Republican, was elected mayor with 172 votes to 134. L N Marsden also won four year council seat. H D Baytes and D A Matheson with Edgar Benson won soft term posts. John T Rasmussen remains holdover councilman. Democrats win recorder and treasurer slots but party not sole factor in vote.
Activities at Southern Utah State College include Victoria Christensen lectures in the chapel and a girls' Economics Club talk. The two Halloween events featured the B A C Orchestra, masked revelers, games, and dancing with guests from the faculty and ex members.
A large sale of thirty to forty thousand acres of state land in Garfield County is planned for next Tuesday at 10 o'clock at the front door of the county house. The lands, mostly school sections, span from the Garfield County line east to the Nevada state line west. An estimated crowd of 100 to 500 bidders is expected, with hotels and cafes anticipating heavy business and potential multi day proceedings. The annual Fearo wan High School election produced a Climbers victory over the Boosters party. Leaders Howard Burt and Laura Klorris led campaigns aided by the Junior group while seniors hosted the Halkereen Halloween party with orange and black decor. New officers include Commissioner of Correspondence Laura Klorris and Judge Clair Hulet among others. The event drew Cedar City youths for the social occasion.
The Iron County Chapter of the American Red Cross based in Parowan Utah will reorganize on Sunday afternoon November 18 at the Tabernacle directly after church. Officers for the ensuing year will be elected and the public urged to attend so proper selections may result.
Cedar City on November 2 reports plans at the B A C for a Good English week. A one act play will illustrate vulgar English during chapel on November 7. English classes will hold a poster campaign and a contest on Good English with emphasis on proper writing and speaking.
The Imperial Players presented Love Eternal or Smiling Through last week featuring Winston Orton in a leading role. The group, directed by Mr Farnsworth, showcased strong acting and musicianship with an orchestra that enhanced performances. A large audience appreciated the show and anticipation for a winter return grew. Also, a yearly subscription payment arrived from Kliss Josie Curtis of Gunnison, a former city resident.
Parowan stockholders urged to attend a ten o clock Saturday meeting to decide on restoring the Equitable Co op store. The group outlines an estimated 12 000 payment plus debt assumption to reclaim the property valued at about 60 000 including store buildings and stock. If funds aren’t raised the store may be taken over by others. Nearby business leaders Gordon and Sprague were in Parowan. Miss Luella Hyatt supports the Times with a yearly subscription. Salt Lake City mayoral race results show Neslin leading and Burton Green atop city commissioner race. A cattle shipment from Parag morphs to Los Angeles for business.
