Rules from the Forest Office outline camp use conduct for Dixie Forest areas. Items urge extinguishing matches, disposing of tobacco ashes properly, maintaining sanitary camps, avoiding defacement and cutting trees, protecting improvements, and promoting fire safety for health and long term enjoyment.
William Peterson explains six key facts for wheat farmers ahead of the May 25 wheat adjustment program referendum. The board held its regular May session and approved a one year lease bid for land in Section 17 Township 34 South Range 49 West. It discussed building a two room house for elderly Dolokinaski couple with county material funding and deed arrangements. A license reduction for dance halls outside cities was deferred for a month. Taxes were refunded to the Bentleys due to survey discrepancies. Road right of way to Iron Mountain was planned with condemnation steps and court action to follow.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Burt and relatives, former Parowan residents, traveled from Junction due to Mrs Burt’s mother illness. They spent a short time in town and had dinner with Mr and Mrs Wim U Thornton.
A wire from HI W W Pratt of the San Diego Fruit and Produce Exchange says pea planting will begin June tenth. About seventy five to one hundred acres may be planted with under contract seed beds ready. Day Farms Co Oscar M Lyman Daniel Crawford Peter H Gurr and others expected to plant smaller acreages. crop profitable and provided employment for pickers.
State fish and game commissioner Newell B and B Cook proclaims opening at 4 am Sunday May 19 in Utah except where noted. Navajo Lake Kane County Sevier County waters and northern streams open June 15. some streams closed. Licenses strictly enforced no over seven inch release no fishing 9 pm to 4 am. Weather may affect opening plans and access to Yankee Reservoir Panguitch Lake roads.
The sanitary project started by the FERA in this locality was halted at the start of the week due to funding shortages. Engineer Lex Shields said it should resume in a few days and urged interested residents to apply to the health board for a septic tank or outdoor sanitary toilet.
Mayor L N Marsden proclaims Saturday May 25th as Poppy Day urging citizens to wear the memorial poppy and donate to aid World War living victims through the American Legion and Auxiliary. The proclamation notes Parowan’s WWI sacrifices and designates May 26 as Poppy Day in the city. Mrs E G Matheson visited Cedar City Wednesday.
The Five Mile forest camp has been renamed Vermilion Castle Camp with the prize winning title Vermilion Castle Camp chosen by Forest officials from local submissions. A signboard was placed at the entrance, a christening was delayed by weather and a prior college outing, and local cleanup efforts were partial. Forest Ranger Frank Seaman reported plans to build a trails network and widen the approach road, contingent on cliff avoidance to keep costs manageable.
Annie Hyatt Mitchell 53 widow of Henry A Mitchell died at home from Brights disease and complications. Born August 1 1881 in Parowan she married Henry in 1906 and leaves four children Claire Tiulet Orville Halterman Claud and Mildred Mitchell all in Tarowan plus four siblings. Funeral planned Sunday at 4 pm East Ward chapel. Community mourns a longtime resident.
Iron County property owners with questions on assessed values will hear complaints and seek adjustments as the board meets next Monday May 20 as a Third of Equalization. They will convene in Cedar City on Saturday and again Monday, returning to Parowan Tuesday May 28 with a State Tax Commission representative on hand for the Cedar City and Parowan sessions.
Most of the Iron County School District teachers sent contracts back signed. A long list of names appears including Glenn E. Snow Louise C. Adams Wendall Bayles Aston Andersen Ivan Decker and many others. Five new teachers Vivian Wide Frank Dalley Eleanor Robinson Kate Isom and Vivian Leavitt fill vacancies with Parowan having one opening due to illness.
Memorial Day observance on May 20 in Parowan features a public meeting at 10 p.m. under American Legion direction near the Monument south of the library. The program includes singing, prayers by Edward G. Matheson and others, talks by Mayor Marsden and A C Hatch, band and quartet performances, readings, and a LegionAuxiliary outing to Vermilion Castle camp five miles away.
Mrs LaPreal Ward came back Wednesday after a short visit with her relatives in Selma.
Parowan stake of the L D S church hosts a quarterly conference in Parowan with Saturday session at 2 p m in the West Ward chapel and Sunday meetings in the East Ward chapel. Elder John A Widtsoe may attend or be replaced by J Reuben Clark.
The West Ward Relief Society held its annual Mothers Day social on Tuesday May 10 honoring all mothers in the ward. President Melinda M Adams presided with Hazel Pendleton conducting. The program featured singing readings violin solos and tributes to mothers including several honored guests over eighty. Luncheon followed in the banqueting hall with a five layer cake by Mabel Wilcock and tokens for attendees. Thirteen Lions club members attended a district meeting in Cedar City with speakers including district governor J W Thornton and Rev W Murray Allen.
Mrs Josephine Wimmer Morris traveled from Bingham yesterday to see her daughter Yelen who has been attending the B and B with A G this winter.
