The April county board meeting, with Commissioners Walloch and Levy present, approved a compromise to settle delinquent taxes for 1928–1932 on Milner Corporation and Utah Iron Ore Corporation property at Desert Mound for 12009, payable in monthly installments beginning June 15, with royalties to Milner pledged to fund payments.
The West Ward Relief Society hosts a Mothers Birthday Party next Tuesday May 6 at 2 PM in the recreation hall with a parody on wash day choruses and varied skits. The East Ward follows the next day with a Mothers Day themed event inviting all ward mothers.
Miss Lucile Taylor and Misa Elizabeth Holyoak of I tiwo Farowan were wed in Beaver in late April with licenses issued there. Taylor married Claude Houchen on the 24th and Holyoak to Dan Clark on the 28th. Both brides are daughters of local families and will reside in Cedar City.
The Parowan Stake of the LDS holds a weekend conference at West Ward chapel with general church authorities expected. Sessions include women’s organization focus Saturday afternoon, priesthood union evening, Sunday School convention work, and a combined stake meeting in the East Ward chapel. George H. Durham and J. P. Goddard are anticipated to attend from the Sunday School board.
Superintendent N J Barlow reports nearly all district teachers who received contracts have signed and sent them back. Most are due by the 10th, with some held for a few days pending permission. Transfers and potential replacements are under discussion, with Miss Zona Pendleton possibly moving to Cedar City and Miss Mary Adams expected to stay.
One of the Bettridge twins born to Mr. and Mrs. Webster Bettridge died Saturday. The surviving twin remained in critical condition, later reported improving at the hospital. The deceased was buried Monday with speakers Simon A Matheson Harley W Dalton and Barbara M Adams present. Music by Jr and Mrs Wm M Dalton. Opening prayers by David Matheson and David Richards.
Parowan High School completes another successful year with forty four graduates the largest class in school history. Eight o clock graduation in the high school gymnasium features Hing Hendricks of the B A C English department delivering the address and James Robb giving the valedictory. The class includes thirty four Tarowan students, nine Paragonah, and one Summit student.
Elden Adams side triumphed over Ormont Gurrs in an attendance contest held by the Gospel Mes engres class of the East Ward Sunday school in April. Gurrs side hosted winners at a Saturday night party in the recreation building banquet hall with dancing games and refreshments. The contest boosted Sunday school attendance and will likely be repeated. Mrs Melinda Adams returned Tuesday from Springs Lake where she visited ill mother.
Clifford Edwards son of Mr and Mrs Edward Edwards of Parowan and Alice Anna Mortensen daughter of Mr and Mrs Enoch Mortensen were married Saturday evening at the bride’s parents home. Bishop W L Adams officiated with only immediate family present. The couple are popular young people with many friends in their communities.
Weather across the region has been very unusual with multiple snow flurries and cold winds since the month began. Moisture accumulates to 1.66 inches by noon, aiding drought-stricken ranges and gardens, though forage and lambing plans are stressed for livestock and sheep operators amid uncertain forecasts.
A countywide taxpayers meeting is set for Friday May 13 at 2 p m in the Court House Faroawan. Dr M H Harris statistician of the Utah Taxpayers Association will present statistics and illustrations to show current tax levels and guide reductions in public expenditure. All taxpayers urged to attend free admission. Wilford Day et al. organize.
Oscar M. Lyman chosen by the Forest Service to supervise flood control construction in the reforestation program. Winsor cites strong past work. Lyman likely to oversee Salina Canon projects with crew member Ted Wilcock joining, while Farowan is noted for benefiting from relief-funded improvements.
County relief committee meeting in Cedar City chose recruits for two reforestation groups. The inexperienced group of ten and the experienced pool of thirty eight were to be drawn from area towns including Parowan Paragenah and Cedar. Final employment rests with Forest Service officials and Army examinations follow. The May allotment is confirmed. June plans unclear.
