School teachers contract list to fifty in district

Contracts for the coming year have been sent to fifty district teachers by the School Board. Several who were approved have since indicated they will not return or have not signed, with positions to be filled later. The first group of contract recipients includes many named teachers and staff, with further details to be announced.

Band Concert Promised Sunday At High School

The P I S band will give a concert on Sunday May 8 at 7 p m on the High School lawn or in the auditorium if rain. M Men and Gleaners Dinner Dance Draws 200 Attendees

The M-Men and Gleaner Girly dinner dance at the West Ward chapel banquet room and recreation hall attracted about two hundred members from various wards of the Stake. Lois Jones hosted, with programs from Cedar 2nd Ward, Paragonal Ward, Parowan East and West, Cedar 1st and 3rd, Summit Ward, plus a guest talk by Mr. Giles from the General Board.

Sister of Cedar People Dies in St George

Gladys Clark Hafen 43 of St George died Saturday after a lingering illness and surgery. Funeral in St George Monday with burial in St George Cemetery. Survived by husband Herman Hafen and three daughters, plus five siblings including Daniel and Douglas Clark. Hafen active in church work and former Relief Society and YWMIA leader. Born Parowan 1895 and lived in Santa Clara before moving to St George in 1927.

Iron County Hospital Opens Doors for Open House Event

Iron County Hospital will hold Open House on Thursday May 12 a National Hospital Day observance. The public is invited to tour the facility to learn how hospitals protect health and support medical progress through trained staff equipment and research.

District Court Sessions Start Monday in Iron County

The May term of the Fifth Judicial District Court in Iron County opens Monday at 10 a.m. Judge Will L ifoyt will preside. Few public interest cases are set, with one criminal case, State of Utah vs Gabriel Varga, charged with resisting an officer in Cedar City last Saturday night. Civil matters fill the rest of the calendar, many likely to be cleared.

Dark Hour Play For Seminary Benefit In West Ward

A May 12 benefit performance of The Dark Hour a six act comedy drama is planned in West Ward to raise funds for the Parowan Seminary. Isobel Gallienne Foyer, Bob Brunner tied to Hollywood, will star with a St George cast. proceeds help finish seminary financing. Local students will sell tickets with reserved seats at the Drug Store next Tuesday.

Poppy Day Volunteers Planned by Auxiliary Unit

Mrs. Valeria A. Holyoak, Poppy Day chairwoman of the YParewan Unit, reports about twenty volunteers will distribute the small red memorial flowers citywide on Poppy Day May 28. She thanks all who volunteered and notes the May meeting will be scheduled after Department President Mrs. Lewis arrives.

East Ward Sunday School Installs New Superintendent

The East Ward Sunday School installed Howad Joseph as superintendent with Alma Evans as first assistant and Gaylord Whitney as second assistant. Retiring leaders Ancel J. Adams, Peter H. Gurr, and Ray D. Garner served eight years. A Mothers Day program is planned for Sunday at 1000 with classes presenting talks readings and music.

The May meeting of the local camp of the Daughters of the Pioneers will be held Thursday afternoon May lath at the home of Mr and Mrs John L Lowder. The lesson topic is Findian Slavery of the West. Hlandha Lamb and her sister from Tequerville will attend and perform several musical numbers. The sisters are blind teachers who have worked with Mr Lowder. All members and interested people are invited.

Parowan City Council designates May 9 through 14 as Clean-Up Week and appoints Beautification Committee led by George Mitchell to head the drive. The meeting covers tree planting, demolition of an unsafe old house, dump site planning, street work, and a 25 year franchise talk with Mt States Tel and the salary raises for city staff.

The Parowan Garden Club will meet on Monday in May to discuss solving garden problems for vegetables and flowers. A large order of gladiolus has been received and members are urged to place orders.

A proclamation by Mayor I. A. C. Hiatch designates May ninth to fourteenth as Clean up Week to improve appearance and health. Citizens urged to clean yards repair fences remove unsightly sheds and barns and especially clean corrals to reduce flea breeding sites.

Mortensens Announce Daughter's Marriage

Relatives received an announcement of the marriage of Mrs Helen Mortensen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hans J Mortensen, to Mr Lloyd Ellsworth Howard of North Hollywood California. The marriage took place in the Mesa Arizona L D S temple on May 7. They will be at home after May 16 at 5611 Craner Avenue North Hollywood. WM. Pritchard returned from St George after wintering there. Hugh Matheson was taken to county hospital with congested lungs but is improving.

Gurr Burns Sherratt Married in Manti Temple

Miss Tla Ciurr of the city and Burns Sherratt of Cedar City were wed early this morning in Manti, with Ila’s parents accompanying them. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gurr, has studied locally, while the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sherratt of Cedar City. A miscellaneous shower was held for the bride at her parents’ home Wednesday night.
