Community Drives Near Quota as Totals Rise

Local drive chairmen report Arovan and nearby communities nearing their fundraising targets. About $1,100 collected so far with $212 more needed to hit the $1,260 goal for the two towns. Large firms and Cedar City trails behind but show improvement. Final tallies to be released next week.

High School Contest at Agricultural College Auditorium

Contestants from HH High will speak on Cause and Cure of Juvenile Meney at the Agricultural College auditorium on April 5. The event, under the Office of Defense, will be broadcast locally on KSUB at 9 am with Preston Gledhill as chairman. Burns L. Finlinton of BAC will feed the six minute extemporaneous rounds and judge each speaker on content and delivery. A separate Ward Mutzal meeting features the play New Fires next Thursday at 8:30 pm in Ward’s theater, starring Morris Rowley and Burt, with invited members from other wards attending.

Sionah Plans Hall Induction for Honorary Members

Sionah will host a Friday night induction event at Eonath on April 7 to honor local men for service. A cordial invitation goes to Parowan and the community to join the induction ceremonies and extend welcome to the inductees.

Mutual improvement groups to hear Japan lecture

East and Westward Mutual Improvement Associations will join after the preliminaries next Tuesday evening to hear Burne Finkinson, chairman of the Social Science Department at Branch Agricultural College, discuss Japan. All adults are urged to attend at 8:30 after the opening exercises.

Parowan Seminary Plans Easter Sunrise Service Event

Parowan Latter Day Saint Seminary schedules a combined graduation and Easter service in Parowan West ward on Sunday morning April 9 at 9 o clock. Seminary principal Alton B Merrill announces a program featuring drama music and a visit by a guest speaker. Full details to appear in the next Times issue.

Schools Return to 9 Oclock Start Time Next Monday

The grade and high schools will resume a wartime schedule with classes at 9 AM from next Monday, replacing 9:30. The Thursday through Friday hours shift includes lunch at 12 and return at 1:15, with daily close at 4 PM. The term ends April 28 and graduation plans are under way for April 23.

Navy Selectees Report For Final Induction

Ten men registered in Iron county for selective service left Thursday for U S Navy training. This first call from Iron county in weeks includes Cedar City men Donald M Adams, Dee R Walker, Robert Haze Hunter, Jas H Davenport, Keith Neilson, and others from Summit St George Fillmore Ogden plus transfers from Salt Lake City and California. The final call for the month precedes an Army call on April 12 and a large April 12 physical exam group. local draft board Fisher Clark may have been called.

Death of Local Resident Jesse F Lowder Passed Away

Jesse F Lowder, about 70, longtime resident, died of a heart attack after breakfast. Survived by wife Alice Bentley Lowder, married June 4, 1904, and several children including Frank, Wilford, Glenn, Amasa, Carl, Boyd, Emma, LaRee, and Ella Pieldstead, plus four brothers and four sisters. Funeral plans pending word from two sons in Army camps in California and Texas.

Prom Is Outstanding Spring Social Event

The Junior class of Parowan High School held a spring prom last Friday night described as an outstanding social event of the school year. Despite over two hundred young men in the armed services, many students and patrons from Parowan and Paragonah attended, with Cedar City couples joining. Decorations were modest due to war conditions, but the large, well behaved crowd made the prom successful financially and socially.

Paragonah Matron To Celebrate Birthday

Paragonah matron Mrs. Alice R Topham, oldest lifelong resident, plans an eighty fifth birthday open house at her Paragonah home on Monday April 3 1944 from 2 to 4 pm. She recalls Fort era events, keeps busy with household duties, and has stitched six quilts since January. The family notes a Nevada trip last November, pine nuts gathered, and lists eight children with Betsy Boardman and Bishop J Leonard Topham of Paragonah and Ina L Middleton of Cedar City as survivors plus nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
