A weekly meeting of fair committees approved most department plans for the premium list. Departments named include Sheep, Cattle, Fences, Sine, Horticulture, and Advertising with numerous members listed. Budget and dates for the fair and Parowan Race were discussed, with final details to be set by the General Committee and publication of the premium list planned in local papers.
Cedar City prepares for the sixth annual art exhibit in the high school gym starting April 14 and running through April 26. With war restrictions eased, organizers expect a larger turnout and more paintings from county schools churches and private homes. Roscoe A. Grover publicity chair announces opportunities to purchase works, and LC Miles chairs the event with Hazen Coopley and Grover overseeing operations.
Full military memorial for Cpl. Claude D. Adams United States Marine Corps will be held in Paragonah ward chapel on Sunday March 24 at 2 PM. Adams was reported missing in the Peleliu battle Western Pacific and later presumed dead by the War Department. Family requests no flowers and invites all returned service men from both Purowan and Paragonah to assemble at the home of Mrs. T W Jones by 1 PM with relatives and friends following the service.
The Parowan high school faculty plans April 18 as Achievement Day alongside the Ag livestock show. Exhibits from all departments will be displayed, with Dr Donald Bell of Utah State Agricultural College to judge livestock. Warren A Dalton named Farm Mechanics end show chairman. Home Economics will show clothing. other departments urged to contribute. Dalton also noted as alternate Union Pacific scholar in Tron County. Dick Nelson of Cedar won first. Alvin Decker left Parowan Mercantile for Logan as a temporary meat cutter. Mrs Decker and family to join later. Joseph Matheson will take Decker’s place. Mrs Luella Adams to work in LDS temple at St George for a month. she and her husband and others active in local Genealogical Society.
Several local servicemen were discharged this week. Sheldon Clark of this city, son of Mes Vide R Clark, and Marion Arnold Clark of E Vanston Wyoming, left Fort Douglas after 18 months overseas with the 66th division. Jay E. Rogerson, son of Mr and Mrs John Rogerson of Fillmore, returned with his wife to be with family after 14 months in Europe with the 65th Infantry. Norman M. Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh L. Adams, received his discharge from the US Army at Fort Douglas after a year of service mainly spent at Fort Riley Kansas. Richard Richards of Mac Navy, released at Charleston, S C, and visiting relatives in Texas, spent time with his brother Carl Richards. He served since May 1943 aboard a Destroyer in the Pacific. Cedar City approves locating a new race track and rodeo grounds south of the city between the stock driveway and water tank after a site committee study. The plan repurposes a former skating pond area and aims to be ready for use this year. Previous plans to expand a municipal park with a track and picnic ground east of Coal Creek were abandoned due to land access issues and doubts about combining the projects.
The Wishoprics of Parowan wards announce a joint Sacrament meeting next Sunday afternoon March 24 at 2 p.m. in the East ward chapter. About 125 students from Beaver Seminary will present music and speaking under Seminary principal Walter K. Kirksick. All parishioners urged to attend. Mr. and Mrs. S A Halterman plan Salt Lake City trip to consult specialists about Mrs Halterman’s health. A misc shower was held for Mrs C Neilson hosted by her mother Mrs Wislet Clark.
A large crowd attended Cedar City Chamber of Commerce housing meeting in the county courthouse to hear details of the Federal G I housing program from W Arthur Jones Mark Webster and contractors Paulson and Davis They outlined costs around 7500 for brick construction and 14 percent less for frame homes with 2 bedrooms and full basement Financed by GI loans up to 4000 and bank funds with 20 year payments about 45 monthly, plus priority material allocations for GI projects and a second plan allowing a 3500 loan at 6 percent for owner built homes, with plan approval required The next Chamber luncheon is April 1 at Taylors cafe.
Joseph H. Page 38, once of Parowan Pleasant Grove then Cedar City, died Tuesday in Cedar City after a visit with Millard Halterman. Funeral Saturday at Pleasant Grove with burial there. Survived by widow and two sons of Orem, mother Dora H. Page of Salt Lake City, two sisters Rita Bailey Monticello and Pearl Nichols Salt Lake, brother Glen Page Salt Lake.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wm. T. Morris Jr. were held in St. George South ward chapel this Monday. Born August 6, 1888 in Minersville, she married Wm. T. Morris Jr. June 12, 1909 in the Salt Lake Temple. The family lived in Minersville, Beaver, Parowan, and settled in St. George in 1927. Surviving are her husband, children LeGene Morris, Mrs. Preston Hafen, Audrey Morris, seven grandchildren, one sister and one half-sister.
Katherine Mitchell of Parowan, daughter of Mrs. Georgia B. Mitchell, selected by the Men’s Pan-Hellenic Council from Phi Alpha Beta Sorority at B A C to compete for the Pan-Hel Queen crown. The Pan-Hellenic Hall and announcement will occur March 30 at the college. Miss Mitchell is a sophomore majoring in business. Mr and Mrs Enoch Rasmussen celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at home yesterday.
Mrs. Sidonie Mo Gruenberg, a leading family life authority, will lecture at Parowan High School at 11 am Thursday on Parents Young People and Money, and at 4 pm on Newer Concepts of Discipline. She is accompanied by Miss Winifred Hazen and others, with further talks at Cedar City and Iron County venues. neighboring communities invited.
Parowan students at BAC show enrollment more than doubled from last spring quarter. Men outnumber women as new student orgs form to handle growth and plans begin for a Garden Jubilee. Fifty-year BAC Parowan connection begins next fall with sophomores Albert Adams Bernell Evans Marie Lyman Leonard Mickelson Katherine Mitchell and freshmen Shalla Hyatt Ward Lowe Bryce Orton Paul Orton Alleda Pendleton Mark Robinson Gordon Whitney Homer Whitney plus Maxine Lund student body president. Summit residents Valayce Stubbs Rex Hulet Zi na Radford Seen Lawrence and other special Liberal Arts student also attend.
Mr and Mrs F E Taylor proprietors of the Taylor Cafe are remodeling to add five rooms on the second floor. A new stairway from the alley will provide access to the top floor where four guest rooms and a sitting room will be ready once materials arrive. The project will expand accommodations, boost income, and repurpose an idle building portion.
