Utah lawmakers push forward revenue and taxation measures while avert ing major issues. The joint appropriations committee delays action asking ten extra days as the session nears adjournment. Pensions and welfare bills draw protests and stalled votes amid procedural battles and warnings from Governor and parties.
Relief Societies of the two Farowan Wards will observe their Annual Day on March 16 at Tress Bay, advancing from March 17 due to other events. Officers will lead a joint afternoon meeting followed by a public evening entertainment. Further details will appear in the Times next week.
The Hers bert Hyatt family reunion takes place tomorrow in the West Ward Recreation Hall banquet room with a daytime dinner and evening dancing. All heirs are expected, including Mrs Henrietta Tteed of Los Angeles who arrived earlier in the week. the event marks the Hyatt anniversary but was delayed by bad weather and illnesses.
Published list shows claims approved by the Board of County Commissioners at February meeting. It excludes officer salaries and welfare payments. totals for those are given. A Ladies Garden Club was organized last Monday with Mamie Orton as President Libbie Seab as Vice President Hilda Ryans as Secretary. Meetings held each Monday at 4 PM in Benson's Grade School room. All ladies invited to join. The aim is to introduce new flowers divide what is grown and encourage everyone to grow flowers if not more than two rows the vegetable garden.
Notice to Legion Auxiliary members calls for a Parowan meeting Thursday evening March 11 with venue undecided. Cedar City representatives will attend and a good local turnout is encouraged as Mr and Mrs Lynn Green, among those snowed in at the Grand Canyon this winter, are visiting relatives nearby.
Funeral services for Leon Benson were conducted last Sunday at West Wand Chapel Medie with many relatives and friends in attendance. Rex Ward led the services with readings by Lay Leader Wilford Day and contributions from the ward Priesthood, Scouts, and Scoutmasters. Speakers included Joseph Steves, Mary Maraden, DB. Rolling, Leon and Bvors, and J. W. Bentley, who praised Benson’s fine traits while poems, solos, and a violin piece enriched the program. Taps closed the service at the cemetery, led by Kenyon Robinson and David Hatch, and Bishop I. L. Adams dedicated the grave. Pallbearers were Hillman Stevens, Keli Warren, pemarc Stubbs, Jay Orion, Kenneth Lyman, and Lloyd Dalton.
Mrs Virgie Wooley Myers of Bandy near Goodsprings was mauled by a mongrel dog that sprang at her, severing a deep cheek gash and a bite on the leg. She was taken to Las Vegas for care as hydrophobia fears arose. the dog was killed and the head sent to the state pathologist in Reno for analysis.
The Cedar Breaks Cafe in the Marsden Toggery building will open Sunday afternoon. Elmo Lowder, age 16, proprietor, says all equipment is in place and readiness is complete. The cafe will operate day and night serving short orders to full dinners with candy and soft drinks.
About 125 Parowan Seminary students spend Saturday in the St George temple under teacher A. N. Kimball with local ward helpers. The trip departs at five o'clock in private cars. Earlier, Mr and Mrs Jay of Salt Lake City visited relatives in Parowan and nearby areas.
With only 11 working days left in the 60 day session the Utah legislature faces a tight deadline for final action. Governor Blood had approved 27 measures with 24 becoming law. 23 measures withdrawn or killed. taxation and homestead exemption issues dominate. A direct primary bill and liquor legislation loom, while a Bourbon platform funded proposal faces scrutiny. Social welfare and revenue concerns guide committee priorities as leaders seek to balance budget needs and policy promises.
The regular monthly meeting of the local camp of the Daughters of Pioneers will be held next Thursday at the home of Mrs. Maude Calton. The lesson by Mr. A. N. Kimball will cover "The United Order" and program elements include a solo by Mrs. Mary Delton and a musical number by Augusta Adams’ family.
Parowan High School placed second in the division standings after beating Orderville 60 27 but losing to Kanab 38 17. Mickleson scored 20 points, with Gurr 11 and Lamoreaux 9. The team led Dixie 14 18 at times but fell short in key games, while Enterprise still could tie Parowan for second with remaining games. The finale is set for St George Saturday.
