Committee Named For Jay 4th Celebration

The general committee chosen Friday night by representatives of church and civic organizations plans a Parade and daylong events for Jay 4th celebrations. John Fur, chair, leads subcommittees for parade, program yard, and decorations with local leaders named to run each area. Activities include a parade, flag raising, morning meetings, sports for all ages, dances, and a delegation portraying Uncle Sam and other figures. Prizes of 5.00, 3.02, and 2.00 will be awarded for parade floats.

Women’s football practices expand with weekly sessions

Rome city women are invited to evening practice at 6 o clock this week and on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday at the library or school grounds. The program, led by Mrs Mortensen, aims to boost local participation as the team prepares for an upcoming game against Utah Parks, following a 9 to 6 win by a tough group of players.

West Sunday School Program at Ward Meeting

The Hoy Scout troop from West Ward will travel by Dan Crawford’s truck to the National Parks Council Camp at Boulder Mountain for June 26 to 30. About seventeen boys, led by Scoutmaster Veron Decker, will hike swim and fish in a fisherman's paradise near Becknell, with Provo council officials supervising.

Noted Educators Teaching At BYU Summer Session

Special to the Times reports BYU summer session draws leading authorities across fields with Dr. Ned H. Dearborn and Dr. Fred C. Frey among instructors. Highlights include the third annual Conference on Education June 19 to 23, guest artists such as the Roth Quartet and Rollin Pease, a Timpanogos Hike on July 14 and 15, and Maurice Jones among 470 registrants in Provo. The first term runs to July 21, followed by Alpine term July 25 to August 26.

Packing sheds readied for early pea harvest at depot

The Union Pacific Freight Depot packing shed expansion will be finished soon to start the pea harvest around July 10. Weather has hindered early peas for six weeks, but improvement is hoped in two to three weeks. About 200 acres of early peas and roughly 800 acres of main crop expect harvest by August 10. Pacific Produce Distributors plans to pack carrots and broccoli from Iron County this year.

East Ward to Hear From Conference Visitors

East Ward will hold a Sunday afternoon meeting at 2 o clock to hear reports from ward members who attended a recent Salt Lake City conference. Primary and Mutual Improvement Association members who attended the June sessions will present their experiences, with a large ward turnout expected. Adelbert Farnsworth and family of Ogden are visiting Cedar City and Summit with relatives.

East Ward Chapel To Be Improved This Summer

A planned summer project at East Ward Church will improve exterior woodwork interior trim and upgrade lighting plumbing and heating. Bishop W S Adams says the $500 cost will be split with $250 cash from the church and the rest in labor by ward members. Work aims for completion by fall with replacement radiators and redecorated classrooms funded by ward auxiliaries.

Lyman to Furnish Logs for Drums Along the Mohawk Filming

Ray Lyman contracted to supply 1300 to 1400 logs for use in a Twentieth Century Fox picture to be filmed in Sidney Valley. Scenes include cabins and a stockade fort for the Revolutionary era epic. Sets to be completed by July 6 with crews and carpenters mobilizing. project cost estimated at $2,000,000.

Entertain at Shower for Bride of Last Week

City Considers Pea Pickers Camp Problem

A city council special meeting addressed camps for transient pea pickers arriving for harvest around July. Officials noted two camps already set near Main Street and the East edge, lacking sanitation, water, or lights. Local rep Di Fiore said Pacific Produce Co. is not sponsoring camps or employing the men yet, with Matt Coelho arriving to organize early picking and shipping.

Dr Stark Leads County School Landscaping Efforts

Extension horticulturist Dr Arvil Stark spent Wednesday and Thursday assisting Cedar City Parowan Iron County schools with landscaping plans. He gave a slide lecture in Kanarra and helped homeowners plan home and community beautification. He spoke Thursday at 1 30 p m as a guest for the County Agent and broadcast on KSUB.

Man Seriously Injured by Thugs on Train

Iron County Record reports a brutal assault on Floyd Richie aboard a train between Milford and Modena. Homer Fox and Harmon Holt, both 18, attacked after sharing food, striking with an iron bolt and injuring Richie severely. The pair were jailed. Richie’s condition will determine charges possibly murder if he dies.

Sewing Center to Close Until August First

Mrs. Luella A. Dalton announces the WPA sewing center will close today and stay shut until August 1. July will see teachers of Home Economics attend a summer school at Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, July 3 to 25. Reopening is set for August 1. Eugene Dalton has been in Salt Lake City for two weeks for an internal disorder needing multiple blood transfusions. Miss Carma Orton left for California to visit sisters Vera Matthes and Phyllis Small and will return July 1 with Vera joining for a stay.

Parowan Board of Education approves three new teachers at a midmonthly meeting. Floyd Slater becomes coach, Dorothy Ryan fills physical education, and Ada Dalley heads home economics. Budget approved with minor increases, same thirteen mill tax levy. A school clerk position remains unsettled. Miss Rallo's resignation may extend tenure. Parowan to acquire property for an athletic field with curbside landscaping and a sprinkler system.

Potato Planting to Finish This Week in Me County

The commercial potato crop planting will be completed this week across Me County. Much of the certified seed potato crop has already been planted, with some seed planting delayed to late June or early July. Farmers slow planting to size seed potatoes, aiming for desirable seed size. About 200 acres of certified seed will be planted, roughly the same as last year.

Exchange Club Outing Scheduled for Monday Evening

The Exchange Club plans an outing to Vermilion castle rescheduled from last Monday due to weather. It will be held next Monday evening, June 26, at 8 o'clock if conditions permit. Members must reserve with W. W. Mitchell at the post office by 9 a.m. Monday.
