Daughters of Utah Pioneer Camps announce a July 24 Pioneer Day in Porowan with a 10:30 am public meeting at the Old Rock Church basement and a 4 pm youngsters dance in the Recreation Hall. Program includes Come Come Ye Saints, a chaplain prayer, vocal solo by Mrs Mary Burton, Arthur Joseph speech, harmonica music, readings by Mrs Jean Mendrickson, band numbers, and benediction. Refreshments after the meeting follow special skits and reminiscences. Public invited. arrangements led by DUP Camp captains Mrs Evelyn Lowder and Mrs Lishan Heap along with Minnie Lowder, Florence Mickelson, Mae Benson, Madge Stevens, and Chitra Benson.

Iron County Residents Invited To Escalante Valley Tour
Iron County residents are invited to join an Escalante Valley tour on Wednesday July 21. The event, staged by the Valley coordinating council, begins at New Castle at 10 a.m. with visits to a high efficiency milking unit and major irrigation wells, four irrigation systems, windbreak planting, land leveling effects, and irrigated crops. Lunch hosted by the Escalante Valley Women’s Club follows near Beryl Junction, then a guided tour of the 4,000 acre Zukerman farm.

Paragonah Plans Gala Twenty Fourth of July
Arrangements are under way for a gala Twenty Fourth of July celebration in Paragonah on Saturday of next week. Auxiliary organizations will run events with the Relief Society handling the morning program. MLA officers manage sports with children’s races and carnival booths. A two buffet luncheon will offer home made treats. Proceeds benefit the Ward Building Fund.

Three youths captured after Paragonah store burglary
A burglary at Topham Grocery and Service Station near Paragonah led to the quick capture of three youths after a glass entry breach. Cash and a gum machine containing about ten dollars were stolen before officers from Cedar City and surrounding areas pursued and apprehended the trio, with praise for Sheriff Arch Benson and local peace officers.

Local Men Enter Horses In Ely Race Meet
Reservations for 86 fast horses from five states are in for Ely’s Pony Express Race Meet set for August 21-22 and 28-29. The event offers at least eight races daily over four days, features thoroughbreds and quarter horses, and awards over 10000 dollars in purses under pari mutual wagering. Ely draws about 200 thoroughbreds from 10 to 12 states yearly, with the Futurity Race drawing Intermountain Quarter Horse Association entries. Early bookings show entrants from Parowan and others, with Idaho Arizona Utah Nevada and Oregon represented.

Kristine named daughter arrived July 1 in Provo for Dean and Lynette Lowder Robison. Weight six pounds three ounces. Sister Ladean, 40, and grandmother Mrs Edgar Lowder of Parowan greeted her. paternal grandparents reside in Ely Nevada.

Last Rites For Elmo W Mortensen Held
Elmo W Mortensen, 44, longtime Parowan native, died recently. He married Kauva Pearl Bentley in 1937 and moved to California, where they made their home in Monrovia. He was an operating engineer for Bethlehem Sleep Company and active in LDS Ward affairs. Survived by widow of Monrovia, two daughters Donna Jean and Linda, four brothers and three sisters. Funeral held at Third Ward Chapel with numerous family and friends in attendance. burial at cemetery with dedicatory prayer.

I Corps Serviceman Helps Korean High School Add 10 Rooms
Army PFC Verdel Robinson of Paragonah Utah and fellow I Corps troops’ 231st Transportation Truck Battalion raised over 3500 for Uijeonguk High School in Korea under the Armed Forces Assistance to Korea program. Robinson, a mechanic, joined in April 1953 and reached Korea in October. He formerly worked at the Tooele Ordnance Depot. Also noted, Pvt Richard B Whitney of Parowan Utah has arrived in Korea with the 20th Division’s Indianhead unit for duty with the 2nd Infantry Division.
