Parowan marked Independence Day with a daybreak salute parade and a full program fitting the occasion. The marshal led the High School Band and floats from many local businesses and groups. Prizes went to the Utah float and Daughters of the Pioneers, with numerous honors and a notable Uncle Sam and Goddess of Liberty duo. A public meeting at the East Ward Chapel drew a large crowd, followed by sports events, races, boxing, and a lively dance at the Brown Derby that capped the day.

New WPA Regulations Take Effect Wednesday Morning
The Relief Bill changes wage scales and hours for WPA workers nationwide. Unskilled pay falls from 50 cents to 40 cents per hour with monthly earnings around 39 dollars, while semi skilled and skilled rates adjust to 44 and 54.60 dollars respectively. Monthly hours rise to 130, split as 85 in the first half and 65 in the second, with 20 six and a half hour days per month. Sponsoring units must cover 25 percent of project costs. W J Birch husband of Ella Lowder died at his Price home early Sunday of a heart ailment. Funeral held at Price Tabernacle with F B Hammond of the 1st ward in charge. Interment in Price cemetery. Survived by wife and two young sons Raymond 5 and Ross 2. Also his mother Therza B Birch, two brothers and two sisters. Born Price October 1 184? and lifelong resident except for a stint in Kanatka a few years ago. Amasa Frank Wilford Lowder and Veron Slack attended from here. Elmer Hoppes and Horace Evans visited later.

Matheson Family Holds Reunion in Canyon
A Matheson family reunion occurred July 3, 1939 at Willow Springs in Second Left Hand canyon. More than 180 attendees from Salt Lake City to Duncan Arizona joined Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. Matheson and relatives including Kathleen Gooch Editha Matheson Junior Mack Matheson who just returned from Britain. Simon A. Matheson led the program with visiting singing storytelling and games. Mack shared a history of the Matheson Clan in Scotland based on Edinburg genealogies. Daniel and Catherine Treasurer Matheson, early Parowan settlers, were named as common ancestors.

Young Couple United On Saturday Afternoon
Kathleen Stones daughter of Mr and Mrs Amasa Stones of Paragonah and Carlyle Mitchell son of Mrs Janey Mitchell of this city were married last Saturday afternoon at the bride’s parents home in Paragonah. Diss Stones a Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony in front of relatives and friends. The couple, Parowan High School graduates, will spend the summer at Walter C Mitchell sawmill. A wedding reception and shower followed in Paragonah recreation hall with attendees from both communities. Leonard S Orton left Wednesday for Salt Lake City seeking work.
