Reported in Utah, Dalton of Parowan and Adams of Cedar lead a string of cougar sightings and captures. A female cougar was trapped near Crest Lodge, followed by a large male near Lae Canyon, with two young kittens observed. Local hunters credit the streak to coordinated efforts among coal haulers and wildlife watchers, noting the event as a rare record in the region.
Catherine Richards, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Merton Richards, former Parowan residents now in El Monte, was elected student body president of El Monte Union High School. She won by 225 votes, amid many schools electing girls to leadership roles. A senior active in dramatics, Masquers plays, and Girls League, she has long been a central campus figure.
John A Ho age 72 died at a home in Sanford after a long illness. He was a farmer and longtime Sanford resident, survived by a wife and several family members. The obituary notes his Danish heritage and ties to Parowan and Gow communities.
Beulah Mortensen wed Alma L Jones in a Cedar City church ceremony on January 15. Bishop Leonard Evans presided as family and relatives gathered. A reception followed in the Relic Society room with a program by Marlo Topham and bridal party members assisting.
Newcomers Mr and Mrs Woodrow Watson and son Ralph welcomed a 7lb 12oz baby son at the County Hospital on January 17. Mother and baby are home and well. George F Rowley and wife added a daughter born the same day at the hospital, their third girl. Jay and Betty Miller Jensen had a boy on January 14 at the County Hospital, weighing 6lbs 9oz, with the family in Cedar City while Betty convalesces at her parents’ home in Parowan. The father is building a shop for Al Dobrusky.
Society notes report Miriam Lister hosted the Y M W Club January meeting with guest Mrs Florian Adams. The evening featured favorite recipes quilt block patterns and rug making instruction. At a Wednesday night meeting in the Court Room the Parowan Gun and Rod Club chose Norman Day as president succeeding Warren Pendleton. Leonard Orton was reelected vice-president Ralph Orton became secretary replacing Homer Adams Boyd Mitchell became treasurer. RK L Fenton and Saunders M Clark were elected honorary advisory board members Vern Mortensen Robert Mitchell and Warren Pendleton named as reelected members.

Kams defeat Valley then Cedar in a sequence of basketball and dance fund events. Jaycees sponsor a “Giro of Dimes” dance at the gym Saturday with Orton as organizer and Dimes chair providing a balance for the infantile paralysis fund. A campaign to collect funds continues over the past two weeks to aid victims and provide treatment for afflicted children.
Parowan high carried a 34 to 26 defeat by Cedar City as Robison faced heavy one man pressure and Hatch battled flu, yet five straight wins keep Parowan atop the league with a State tournament shot. Next, Parowan hosts Dixie Flyers, aiming for a close home victory.
Parowan residents and nearby communities will hear Capt. Fred Kelly of Western Air Lines speak on aviation at the high school auditorium next Wednesday at 8 p m. Kelly, a World War I flyer and pioneer pilot for Western Air Lines, has logged over 13 500 hours in air travel and helped lay out the Los Angeles to Salt Lake City route.
Hal Le Orton and Doraine Marie Roothoff were married Friday morning January 23 in the Salt Lake Temple officiated by Dr. John A. Widtsoe. A breakfast for close family followed at the Roothoff home and a reception with about 200 guests at Nibley Park. The couple will reside in Salt Lake City. Hal is a Navy veteran and former Parowan High School student.
Mr. M. M. Taylor of the Utah State Tax Commission will be at the Court House in Parowan on Tuesday Feb 3 and Feb 17 to issue car license plates. Bring Iron County property tax receipts to obtain plates and he will accept state income tax payments. Hours are 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm each day.
Parowan East Ward M Men basketball squad rebounded from Cedar City losses by beating Cedar City 1st Ward 28 7l and Cedar 3rd Ward 44 17 on successive home games. New players Willard Decker and Warren A Dalton recently joined after army release.
