Husband Of Former Parowan Lady Dies In Mexico

Word has been received of the death of Wm. Arthur Wright Jr., 38, who died Friday in Encinady Mexico. He was born in Ogden in 1911, studied drama in Boston after marrying Carol Adams in Ogden, lived in Hollywood, served in World War I, and was studying television at death. He is survived by his wife, daughter Karen, son Billy, his mother, and several siblings. Funeral services were held in Ogden on January 27.

Paragonah Youth Enlists In Air Corps

Thomas Milo Stones aged 18, son of Mr and Mrs Daniel A Stones of Paragonah Utah and a Parowan High School graduate, enlisted in the United States Air Force taking the oath in Captain Patrick D Augustine Assistant Recruiting and Induction Officer office at Fort Douglas Utah on Tuesday January 18. A lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Stones served three years as a member of the Continued on page five.

Iron County Soil Conservation Reports 1948 Accomplishments

According to D Claude Urie chairman district board applications for technical assistance and heavy equipment continue. The district tractor works sixteen hours daily to clear Berry area roads and ease livestock problems. Key practices include land leveling retention storage ponds headgates canal and ditch construction irrigated pastures and dryland meadow plantings. Thirty farm and ranch conservation projects covering 62981 acres were developed this year totaling 190 active covering 262598 acres. Urie notes conservation works such as land leveling irrigation structures irrigated pasture and continued progress on other measures.

Funds Needed To Help Fight Infantile Paralysis

The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis appeals for funds amid a record 1948 polio year. Utah reports rising cases and exhausted national and local coffers. Hospitals have expanded from one to four, with improved treatment accessible and no one refused care in Utah’s decade of progress against the disease.

Parowan F F A Chapter Reports Purchases and Upcoming Events

The Parowan F F A chapter bought a Chester White boar from John H. Boyden of Salt Lake City to improve stock for boys projects and community livestock. Nineteen Green Hands and fourteen Chapter farmers were initiated. A killing plant begins January 29 and runs every other Saturday for pork beef and mutton slaughtering to fund the chapter. A Father and Son Banquet on February 26 will be followed by a dance in the Home Economic Room prepared by the Home Economic Club. Reporter James Anderson.

Rural Life And Education Conference at Cedar City

Rural Life and Education Conference scheduled for Cedar City High School February 8 and 9 will be run workshop style in four areas. Areas focus on Developing Community School Relations, American Democracy, Expanding Neighborhood Industries Arts and Crafts, and Making the best use of Natural Resources with leaders from U E A USAC and local experts. The Board of Education provides attendance via school closure and bus transport. Parowan participants, including Bernalla County observers from New Mexico, will attend to see Parowan clay samples. Parowan High School principal Hatch and Parowan PTA president Adams join a committee to recruit attendees.

Miss Karla Hulet returned to the County Hospital for further treatment and observation with her mother at her side. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Skougard recently returned from Huntington Park California after two weeks with their daughter and family. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dehm, then on to Mr. and Mrs. Troy Cawood in Seligman Arizona and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wadsworth in Las Vegas Nevada, sisters of Mrs. Skougard.

Barton Receives Good Conduct Medal at Clark AFB Parade Ground

At Clark Air Force Base Parade Ground a token presentation awarded Staff Sergeant William H. Barton the Good Conduct Medal. Col Herbert K. Baisley commanded the 5th Reconnaissance Group Mapping. Barton is assigned to the 36th Reconnaissance Squadron Mapping as Photo Technician with the Photo Laboratory. He expects discharge in April 1949.

Salt Lake City Woman Visits Father in Iron County Hospital

Mrs. Lorette Holyoak DeWitt of Salt Lake City has spent time in Cedar City with her father Nels Holyoak, a Parowan native from Paragonah, who has been treated at Iron County Hospital. He was well enough to be moved to his Beaver home Thursday. Gravesside services were held.

Zion Park Rod and Gun Club hosted a Southern District Convention in Hurricane to place a board member for Big Game Control. Irrigation Wells In Beryl Area Near Maximum

State Engineer in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey reports that ground water development in the Beryl area nears the maximum allowed. No new irrigation wells may be drilled after January 13, 1949 within the described region, while the Withdrawal Proclamation of April 19, 1946 remains in force. Continued on Page Four

Paragonah Couple Honored At Golden Wedding Fete

Paragonah residents John H. Williamson and Encora Batty Williamson celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home. Born in Paragonah and Toquerville, they farmed and raised four daughters, one son, eight grandchildren, and a great grandchild. The event drew many friends despite heavy regional storms.
