Parowan High School gym hosts the Region 2 M-Men tournament featuring ten stake teams Wednesday through Saturday. Winner advances to the All-Church M-Men meet in Provo. reception, trophies, and an all-division team are planned. Tickets: 50¢ adults, 25¢ students Wednesday–Friday. Saturday $2 adults, 50¢ students. Proceeds fund tournament expenses.
Former Parowan resident Samuel R. Wilcock 84 died in a Laramie hospital after a long illness. Born January 16, 1871, he helped settle the Big Horn Basin and was an LDS Church missionary. Survived by Francetta Eyre, his wife, and numerous children in Ogden, Denver, Mesa, Salt Lake City, and Cowley. Funeral services were planned in Cowley Ward Chapel.
Dr L W Sorenson of Cedar City Rotary introduced Parowan participants in a luncheon musical. Parowan Literary Club members heard a program on Successful Women by Mrs Arch Benson at a regular meeting last Wednesday. Kate Smith recorded music preceded the lesson at Mrs Thales Brown's home with Mrs A Hills Orton as hostess. Dessert was served.
The Parowan Third Ward M Men basketball team earned the Stake title and will represent the stake in the Regional tournament in Parowan next week after a season of straight wins. They defeated Enoch M Men Monday evening to clinch the title and will face St George Stake winners in the opening game at 7 30 p m. Wednesday. Players include Gilbert Mitchell Clair Robinson Spencer Lemmon Lyle Evans Hal Mitchell Bill Barton Wayne Benson and Carlyle Johnson. Reed Orton is athletic director. A second Parowan Stake team will be chosen from Paragonah and Enoch this week with the winner meeting Milford Monday to face Cedar City Institute at opening game Wednesday at 1 90 p m.
Readers learn Pfe Rodny Kaminska has arrived home from Army duty in Germany to reunite with wife Lila Stratton and their newborn daughter. Kaminska is the son of Mr and Mrs Roland Woolvoak of the city. The family welcomed him after his release from service in Denver.
Social news notes Mrs Amy Knell spending winter with daughter Mrs Ray Adams. Guests include Maggie Page Luella Dalton Sarah Hulet Hilda Tullis Libbie Heap Winnie Whitney. Knell improving from broken hip now walks with crutches. Also, friends visit Mrs Clifton Taylor on her birthday while she recovers from July auto crash as refreshments are served.
Corporal Karl C. Mitchell, 24, son of Mr and Mrs Karl C. Mitchell, completed the Ryukyus Command Leadership School at Fort Buckner Okinawa as the honor graduate in a class of 18. He arrived June 4 1954, entered the Army July 9 1953 in Utah, and trained at Fort Ord California. A Parowan High School 1949 and Brigham Young University graduate, Mitchell serves with the 75th Regimental Combat Team as a coilless rifle gunner.
Parowan matron Dorothy Clark Ward 75 lifelong resident died Sunday at 10 am at her home from a heart attack after a brief illness. She was known as Aunt Dottie and survived by three sons, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a stepmother, two half brothers, and a half sister. Funeral services were held in Parowan with Bishop Howard M. Adams presiding and postlude organ music by Itha Mortensen.
Among the livestock men at the State Woolgrowers convention in Salt Lake City are Elmer Lowe T Randall Adams and Charles F Burton and their wives attending the gathering with other members.
Kindergarten registration will be held February 2 in Mrs Benson's room at Parowan Elementary for children who will be six on or before October 31, 1955. Hours are 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Bring the birth certificate for verification. the child need not accompany the parent.
The Parawah Post Office expects federal gear including post office boxes for its quarters, with a full government set to replace privately owned fixtures by April 10 1955. One hundred seven government boxes have been installed. remaining boxes and screen line fixtures are personal property to be replaced when the new equipment arrives. A government mechanic will supervise the installation and patrons should note that rental money supports the government. Continued on page three.
King Stevenson of the State Tax Commission visits Parowan for one day to collect and issue 1955 car license applications. Owners should obtain an assessment certificate from Deputy County Assessor Glen Halterman and prepare blanks before Tuesday. Commercial vehicles must be weighed before license application.
The Bank of Iron County board unanimously voted to support the Echo Park Daim project action. They will back the educational and advertising campaign in its behalf, as stated by president Robert L. Fenton. The meeting was held in Parowan with most directors present.
Parowan defeated a top Delta opponent 56 to 40 last Friday night to seize the division lead. Eric Clark led Parowan with 17 points while Don Gurr, Don Stubbs, Rodney Bentley, Larry King, Don Halterman and Connell Mitchell contributed. Rod Bentley opened with 8 of Parowan’s 12 in the first period as fouls shaped the pace in the final three quarters.
Mrs Lora Jean Burt Harris 62 died in Iron County Hospital after a stroke. Funeral in Beaver Second Ward was well attended. Born Beaver May 29 1882 to William and Nancy Burt. Survived by two sons Everett Harris and Fred Harris and two daughters Mrs Bernarr Stubbs and Mrs Albert Cherry among 18 grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers.
John C Barton and Martha Reynolds Barton of Paragonah celebrate fifty years of marriage since their 1905 wedding in the St George Temple. An Open House is planned at their family home from 3 to 8 p.m. On Sunday. The couple have eight children, twenty five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Their lives centered in Paragonah with farming and limited eyesight.
The Paragonah Ward Building Fund committee will hold a White Elephant Auction on Monday February 7 at 7 pm in the Paragonah School Building. Everyone in the area is invited and urged to attend to bolster the ward chapel fund.
The Saturday Evening Post article by Robert Sherrod calls Okinawa the most important permanent military base in the Far East. It notes Okinawa has transformed from a 1946 “junk heap” to a modern island with highways, typhoon-proof houses, and the Far East’s only air conditioned air terminal. Sherrod argues Okinawa’s stay is long term, beyond Korea or Japan, and cites Maj. Gen. Ogden on staying in the Far East.
Woodrow and Vera Dilton Decker welcomed a son born Saturday at Iron County Hospital on January 22 observed at 1: am. The infant weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and joins an older brother Rodney and sisters Joan Sanda and Sharlene. Grandparents include Mrs. Marthy Dalton of Parowan.
