Iron County reduced the total budgeted for regular purposes to 312,209.18 dollars, down 26,622.73 from last year. The Board of County Commissioners formally adopted the budget at a special meeting held last week after an earlier hearing. Very few changes were noted in the estimates.
Registration for adult classes in Woodwork and General Crafts is set for Monday January 17 at 7 30 p m in the Industrial Arts Shop at the high school Principal W K Daly announces Duane Van Aundal will teach Industrial Arts at the local school The woodwork class will meet the needs of registrants and the General Craft class covers leather plastic and copper Other adult classes may be organized if there is demand Ten or more signups are needed for operation Contact Principal Daly at the high school before January 15
The rotation shifts so game 10 becomes game 1 and each game moves one week later. Home team favors White at home and Dark away unless agreed. Double week games occur in the 8th round of the second half on Wednesday and Saturday March 13 and 14 at the Region Play-off.
Parowan schools have acquired new audio and visual teaching aids to be shown at a High School PTA meeting hosted by principal W Kirk Daly. Faculty will demonstrate the moving picture projector film strip projector bio-scope opaque projector tape recorder and slide projector. The program titled New Methods of Teaching aims to acquaint parents with modern aids used in the school and how they enrich student education. PTA president Mrs. Claude Adams will preside and invites general public attendance.
Iron County commissioners Warren H Walloch and Jens W Guymon were sworn in Monday at the County Court House with Clair Rowley administering. Present were holdover Douglas Clark and officers Bulloch and others as terms and duties were reassigned including hospital supervision and road oversight.
A membership dinner for the newly organized Chamber of Commerce will be held Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the 1st 2nd ward banquet hall. Walter K. Granger was the guest worker. A musical program is planned with officers Dr L W Sorenson, Dr C Terry, W Kirk Daly, Ivan Decker, Wateon Adams, E Kay Lyman, W Clair Rowley, Leonard S S Orton and Saunders M Clark in charge. Reservations may be made with any officer before Friday noon.
The next regular Hoard meeting will convene at 10 am Monday in the Court House at Porowan.
Overnight guests at the Ivan Decker home included Bryce Draper and daughter Susan of Richfield and Cloyd Draper with Paul Sheldon and LuJean of Marconi as they headed to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. Other visits covered include Christmas in Los Angeles with Evadeen Lowder, a new grandson Michael Frank born Dec 14 weighing 9 pounds, trips by Glenn Halterman to Salt Lake for Veterans Hospital treatment, and a Capitol trip by Harold Barrick. Also noted are travels to Salt Lake for exams by D. Watson Adams, and families visiting from Cedar City and Moroni. Visitors to Parowan and dinner guests at the Decker home are listed, with Hansel and Gretel performed in Salt Lake City.
Cedar City Lodge 1556 BPOE Elk distributed clothing and food valued at 220 to families in Parowan and Paragonah just before Christmas. The lodge contributed 1200 to its annual Christmas Charity drive, with aid extended across Southern Utah and eastern Nevada through participating members.
Pioneer day celebrations force shifts in church activities. Relief Society and Primary meetings for Parowan Ward move from Tuesday to Wednesday, with First and Second Ward Primary and Relief Society also rescheduled. MIA sessions stay Tuesday evening. Officers urge timely note of changes.
Members of the G O Club and partners enjoyed a New Year’s Eve gala starting with a waffle supper at Grayson Gurr’s farm home and a dinner party hosted by Gene and Joy Orton. Maude Parcells hosted the Parowan Literary Club for a Wednesday meeting with 17 members attending to hear W Kirk Daly discuss The Foreign Policies of the United States. The program was arranged by Miriam Lieter and Ida King. The club voted to send 4 girls to Girls State next June as its annual project, with any balance used to buy children’s books for the Public Library.
Lucus M. Benson underwent a Monday morning hernia operation at Iron County Hospital. He is reported to be improving satisfactorily. Continued on Page Three.
Parowan honors its founding with a day long program led by the Parowan Daughters of Utah Pioneers and Sons of Utah Pioneers. Residents and former residents from Southern Utah are invited to attend the civic event and public meeting.
A Parowan community note recalls Mr. and Mrs. William J. Lowder celebrating their long marriage of about 50 years since 1901 with New Year Eve family gathering. In attendance were relatives from Long Beach California and Fillmore, plus descendants totaling 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A church and civic program featuring local dignitaries, school bands, and pioneer tributes followed with a noon meal and an old-time dance to conclude the day, as businesshouses closed to honor the event.
A capacity crowd attended the Paragonah Ward Chapel for the funeral of Ernest Topham aged 57 who died Friday in Cedar City Hospital after months of illness. Bishop Gilbert Hobinson conducted the services with a male quartet and several speakers including Samuel Abbott Norman Heaton and Joseph E Ward. Music featured solos by Ralph Hafen and Edward Barton and a violin piece by Silas Topham.
Parowan battled Panguitch Bobcats in a rough game, trailing 15-5 after one quarter and 30-45 at the end. Rams rallied in the final period but could not overcome the early deficit, with John Benson and Melvin Mitchell each scoring 15 points. Piute beat Piute 71-51 after a slow start.
Utah shot tax office notes Cedar Parowan visit for license plates and a Rams basketball game where Parowan led 32 27 at half, then surged in the final period to win. Top scorers Benson with 148 points at 19.2 per game and Melville with 138 at 11.6 lead the Rams. Preseason tilts set next Friday at 8 00 against the Milford Tigers on their home floor.
