County board approves bond for hospital additions

February meeting notes authorize a 40000 bond for hospital expansions. The plan includes new radiators, kitchen and lobby renovations, and an added major and minor surgery areas. County jail and Old Folks Home contracts are reviewed, plus road work and equipment purchases.

Men Returned From Service This Week

Local note lists several veterans discharged in recent weeks. Sgt Glenn Lowder son of the late Jess F Lowder discharged at Fort Douglas after 35 months in the U S Army wife Trene Shakespeare formerly of Tropic Utah, they resided there before service. Sgt Hugh L Adams son of Commissioner and Mrs Hugh L Adams discharged at Fort Douglas after 43 months service including 13 in France and Germany. He was met in Salt Lake City by wife Elaine Sandberg of Hurricane Utah and they visited northern Utah before arriving home. Bernarr Adams U S Navy discharged at Terminal Island San Pedro Harbor with wife returning home Tuesday evening. he has served since June 1943 and spent six months in Japan with the Army of Occupation. Staff Sergeant Boyd R Morris and wife and baby arrived home to visit parents. discharged at Fort McArthur California after assignments at Camp Roberts and other posts since March 1943 across multiple states. wife formerly from Ogden. Cynl Pendleton shipfitter second class discharged at Shoemaker Navy base California and home with family. entered Navy March 1943 serving on destroyer and later on a net tender from the Aleutians to South and West Pacific areas.

Frozen Locker Plant Ready By March First

M B Bayles, manager of Southern Utah Dairy Company, says the frozen locker plant for Parowan and Paragon residents will be ready for operation early next month. 262 lockers are installed, 200 sold, with Walter B Lloyd Co handling equipment. Power cooling, overhead track, quick freeze cabinet at 40 below, zero storage room, and local workmen installing lockers. Opening target is March unless delays occur.

Norman Mortensen Attends Navy Pacific University

Norman Mortensen of Parowan becomes a student at Navy Pacific University in Pearl Harbor while off duty. The Navy man has served near three years, including about a year at Pearl Harbor. NavPacU opened January 4 with a broad curriculum and over 3000 service enrollees.

Halterman Memorial to Be Held Sunday February 24

Memorial services for Austin Halterman son of Mr and Mrs R L Halterman will be held in the West ward chapel Sunday afternoon February 24 at 230 They were delayed by word from his wife in Los Angeles Austin was declared lost October 24 1944 in the sinking of a Japanese prison ship after being held prisoner since early 1942 Set and Mrs Gilbert L Reed of Los Angeles visited here last week with Reed’s mother and Hyatt family members They were on a trip from Gunnison to Springville then Salt Lake City and temple visits in LDS sites on their return they will visit St George temple too

Cedar City Farm Loan Association to Elect Directors

The Cedar City National Farm Loan Association will hold its annual meeting and election of two directors this Friday at 2 o'clock in the Third ward church building in Cedar City. Members are Federal Land Bank borrowers from Millard Beaver Iron and Washington counties Utah and Clark and Lincoln counties Nevada. J. W. Gillman and J. H. Jensen will attend. The association has mailed dividend checks to stockholders and interest in cooperative farm credit is rising. Current directors are Rolce B. Nelson president Lindau Foremaster vice president Orson F. Parent Teachers Assn to Meet Monday Night

The Parowan school P T A will meet Monday evening in the high school auditorium. Roberta B Rowley PTA president says business on schools will be discussed. High school girls chorus, a skit, and Candlelight Service will follow under Newell B Weight and Mrs Hendrickson. All parents and interested locals urged to attend. Garth Stubbs travels to Seattle with relatives for work at a Coast service station, plans to return to Shoemaker Navy base California.

Centennial Com Calls Meeting Of Group Heads

Parowan Chamber of Commerce Centennial committee met at the Schoolhouse to organize for Parowan’s centennial celebration next year. A further meeting of church school civic leaders and Community Projects was set for next Thursday at 7 30 PM in the High School building to plan cleanup painting and appearance improvements.

Parowan Literary Club Valentine Party Entertains Members

Parowan Literary club members were entertained at a Valentine party hosted by Mrs. Ethel Bayles with Mrs. John H. Pendleton and Mrs. Mariam Lister. Dinner at 8 followed by games and visiting. Earlier meetings featured a reading of Ten Room Cottage by Frances Luning Selleck and a Handel lesson by Georgia B. Mitchell.

Full of Youth play entertains West Ward crowd

West Ward M I A presented the play Full of Youth to a capacity audience at the Westward recreation hall. Directed by May Burt the show featured a large cast of amateur young performers. The report notes strong reception and confirms the event as a highlight of the community gathering. In other news, Lynn Green and family visited Cedar City then Kanab to attend funeral services for John Edward Swapp, 61, of Kanab, who died in a highway crash on U S Highway 89 near Kanab.

East Ward Play Raises Funds with Two Performances

The ward play Peter staged last Friday and again Monday night netted about 244 in Parawon Ku ward building fund. Cast directed by Adams presented a lesson heavy drama noted for entertainment. Audience praise was profuse as 108 was counted here and 46 in Paragonals, with a revival planned tonight at 7 30.

Lecture on Lincoln by Roy Bendell in Cedar City

Cedar Groups sponsor a lecture on Lincoln by Roy E Bendell at the Branch Agricultural College and Wii Music Arts Association Cedar City. The talk centers on Lincoln the man with a life like impersonation of the Gettysburg Address and a focus on his humanity. First Post War Red Cross Drive Starts in March

Cedar City prepares for the first postwar Red Cross drive to run through March with a $500 Iron County quota. Darrell Corry leads Cedar City, and W Scott Mitchell heads Parowan, with local coordinators named for Paragonah Summit Lund and other towns. plans to announce aides in early March.

Military Rites to Honor Quentin Page on Sunday

Full military service will honor John Quentin Page U S Navy lost during battles for the Solomon Islands in June 1943 Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Westward chapel. Lorin S Orton commander of the Parawin Post of the American Legion asks World War Two veterans in uniform to attend along with First World War veterans. Meet at the Page home about 1 o'clock for final arrangements for the church and cemetery services. The Westward bishopric will lead the chapel service.

Ranger Carlson Assigned to Dixie National Forest

Leland H. Carlson, forest ranger and topographic engineer, is reassigned to Cedar City staff as junior forester by supervisor Albert Albertson. He transfers from Gettysburg war mapping, after serving at San Francisco and Crescent City on planimetric surveys for War and Navy departments.

Parowan Reservoir Co to Hold Annual Meeting

The Parowan Reservoir Company will hold its annual meeting next Wednesday evening February 20 at 7 30 in the county courthouse courtroom. John W Bentley secretary reports the annual report will be presented and officers elected for the coming year with any other business to be transacted.
