A city council special meeting Wednesday night discussed tightening up methods for water and tax collection. Mayor Hatel announced a new policy proposal and outlined steps to enforce stricter collection practices.
A mayoral statement defends a water bill collection policy targeting delinquent accounts. The city council adopts a plan to charge delinquent fees and 10 percent penalties while stressing municipal responsibility, urging cooperation and caution against harming residents. The message links social concern with maintaining service and financial stability.
Final choir practice schedules a last rehearsal on Sunday for the group appearing at the conference session. Saturday evening at 7 o clock is set for the last pre event practice with a push for all members to attend. Some members who missed recent sessions are urged to attend to ensure inclusion in the Sunday performance.
Mrs Christine Whiting Parmenter of Colorado Springs Colorado emerges as a notable hobbyist writer. Her alone time as a doctor’s wife led to writing, several books, and a novel length serial titled Shining Palace. Today’s issue features an installment of Shining Palace.
At a special city council meeting, Parowan City approved a contract with Southern Utah Power Co and Tower Co for surplus electrical power for one year with a partial March–May buy and full purchase rest of year. The city also funds street improvements from state gasoline tax shares and discusses delinquent water bills collection. Mrs. Madore Halterman remains hospitalized after leg injury.
Frank Knell longtime Newcastle resident died at the county hospital from pneumonia and asthma related head trouble. Funeral services were held in Newcastle with Bishop John H Tulbaly presiding. A Cedar City quartet sang with family and local mourners attending. He was born October 24 1877 at Pinto and spent 25 years in Newcastle where he farmed and raised livestock. Survived by his widow seven children and a brother and sister.
Congressman Abe Burdock spoke with Oscar T. Chapman about distributing Boulder Dam surplus power to Southern Utah counties. The Boulder Dam Act has no Utah sale provision, but Chapman indicated the Interior Secretary could authorize disposition until needed. If transmission ties with Lincoln County power district in Nevada exist, proposals may be considered for Iron County and Southern Utah. Adrian, Dalton hosted a birthday gathering for Rulon Dalton yesterday afternoon, celebrating his 22nd birthday.
A full schedule outlines a stake conference in the West Ward chapel starting Saturday at 7 40 p m and continuing through Sunday. Main events include a Stake Priesthood meeting, Primary Association social, and later Sunday sessions for Stake Board officers, Sunday School and Primary leaders, with departmental meetings to follow.
The Utah Taxpayer front page shows indirect taxes rising from 600000 in 1916 to over 11000000 in 1937, with general property taxes peaking at 21400000 in 1920 then declining to 15682000 in 1937. It argues indirect taxes may soon exceed direct taxes, urging a shift to pay-as-you-go funding, noting 63 of 243 taxing districts are bond free and schools cut debt by over 2900000 amid building.
The Board of Education plans a February 22 school day to allow teachers to attend a three day Progressive Education convention in Salt Lake City in April. District buses will be restricted to transporting students and school functions only. privately owned buses in the county are unaffected. Cedar City receives $235 for its share of an WPA project to wall up the East Side schools. An investigation into high electricity costs at Cedar Clip schools will review rewiring and possible installation of a diesel plant to generate power.
The Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah will meet in Cedar City on February 19 and 20. President Janes Sargent of Panguitch says the main agenda is planning the year’s advertising campaign with booklets signs TARPS and articles. Charles Hortworth, public relations director of the AN Yearby of Southern California, will speak. The Cedar City Chamber of Commerce sponsors with Arthur Gardney and Walter Lunt leading, a 2:30 p.m. business session at Branch College auditorium, followed by a banquet and dance.
CCC workers to occupy Purowan Canyon as weather allows under Supervisor Bettenson of the Dixie Nations forest. They will move to higher elevations for summer, begin pre road building and fencing on the Approach to Vermilion Castle camp and Bowery section, then later shift to Bowery road work funded but not fully expended for fall. Mr and Mrs Karl Mitchell were in a car crash near Cedar City but uninjured. their son Clark and Merrill Mitchell accompanied them.
County officials reversed a proposal to add a large public domain area between Medway and Little Creek canyon to the Forest Service. Livestock interests warn grazing rights and regional development under Taylor Grazing Admin, while proponents cite conservation and possible roads and recreation. The Times calls for open discussion to inform the public.
