Clergy officials urge households to turn off decorative lights and unneeded appliances during Christmas programs to prevent overloads on transformers. They warn power limits may cause outages and disappoint children, recommending the lights be left off for the hour of the service.
George E LeFevre Ries of Minersville died this morning aged about 63. He spent most of his life in sheep and farming and is survived by four daughters and two sons including Madge Carter of Minersville and Vinnie Young of Johnsville. Funeral services are tentatively set for Sunday in Minersville.
Personal notes report travel and family events as of the holiday season. Mrs Ellis Orton and relatives journey toward California to spend time with Clark and Copeland in Chula and attend the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena while others head to Salt Lake City and Utah for family duties. Seaman Halterman is stationed in San Diego and Rowley family members prepare for a January meeting as coverage hints at office openings in Whittaker district.
Santa Claus will visit Purowanhat children during Christmas Eve programs hosted by Ward Primary and West Ward Sunday School. East Ward program starts 6 20 pm featuring storytelling Christina Story with colored pictures, carols by children, and organ accompaniment. Santa will distribute candy and nuts after performances.
Parowan High School plans a student body dance Friday in the gym with the public invited. The Gun & Rod Club hosts an annual membership dance Saturday night Dec 20 at the high school gym with the 7 Notes orchestra, special decorations, and admission tickets sold separately. West Ward hosts teachers at a Christmas party meeting and gift exchange Friday. Sunday schools hold special Christmas programs. Ward choirs present Music of Christmas Sunday. Elementary pupils perform The Legend of the Snow Man with a capacity audience Thursday. high school students saw it Wednesday. Parish primary officers hosted a Christmas Eve planning luncheon Monday with scriptural readings and gift exchanges.
Veteran Morris of Denver returns home on furlough after months in Korea. He recounts frontline battles on the peninsula and plans to visit family before reporting to Fort Stoneman, California. He and wife travel via Army transport from Wake Island and Honolulu to San Francisco and Tokyo before final stop.
A fragmented record lists Christmas carols and choral pieces featuring contralto, alto, tenor and bass solos, with works titled The Magi Holy Night Thou Long Expected Jesus O Little Town of Bethlehem Good Tidings Glory to God and Little Child Jesus among others performed by mixed choirs and a violin solo in a church setting.
Parowan Wards combine to present a Sunday cantata at 2 PM in the East Ward Chapel. Two speakers will address topics of the day as solos are sung by Herta Burton Joan Bayles Ivan Johnson Vera Taylor and Br Ray Lawman. Mrs due DD Thorley plays violin while Morvin Frecker accompanies at the piano and Jean Hatterman at the arena. Ivan Decker is director.
Amos Hatch principal announces season tickets for the Parowan League basketball games. Tickets cost $2.75 for four reserved seats across five games at the gym. On sale Tuesday at Fentoun Pharmacy, with after Jan 3 sale at the period parts of five. First game will be against Beaver High School Beavers, visiting team. Next game set for Jan 15 with Hinckley.
The marriage is announced for Wednesday December 27 in Parowan at the bride’s parents home. Miss Maxine Alton will wed J Keith Barton of Heaver with family and close friends present. A reception follows at 2:20 in the West Ward Relief Society Rooms. The bride, Parowan High School graduate, attends PAC Cedar City as a sophomore and is a member of Xi Lambda Tau sorority.
Millard Don Watson aged 69, longtime Cedar City resident and former Parowan harbor, died at Iron County Hospital from a heart condition after two weeks illness. He was exalted ruler of Cedar City lodge 1556 Elks, married Lola Sawyer in 1907, and leaves his widow, two sons L. Dow and Millard Watson, a daughter Billie Clark of Las Vegas, three grandchildren, and brothers Dr. Watson of St. George and Ralph C. Watson of Los Angeles. Continued on page four.
All 2040 seats in the War Memorial Fieldhouse at Arane Agricultural College are reserved for the BAC Invitational Basketball tournament taking place December 27 to 29. General public seats on both East and West sides. students in the south bleachers. Tickets via Thorn ton Drug Co Cedar City or by writing to the treasurer.
A parish program features words of welcome, a cradle hymn, and a choral reading including Little Town of Bethlehem. Pauline Topham and Victor R. Robinson lead segments with Eugene Robb and Micheal Lamoreaux, plus primary groups and a Santa Claus appearance with bell chorus and benediction.
The activity calendar lists Kool Tinee on December 22 and Baals featuring Wa Snow Ball De on December 25. Other December events include Veterans merit on December 27, Gun and Rod Club annual membership, and New Year’s Eve Firemen’s Ball from 12 to 4.
Rams, led by Coach Duane Addws, show strong form in three pre season wins and one loss. The team netted 23 of 33 free throws in a Cedar City clash, but Cedar City won 47 to 44. They then beat Enterprise, while Cedar defeated them 43-20 at the BAC Field House. Parowan fans praised the new Field House, expected to boost Southern Utah basketball.
Adrienne Mickelson ANC daughter of Albert Mickelson of this city sends holiday wishes to Mr and Mrs W M Thornton from Germany. She hoped to be home for Christmas but orders kept her away. After three years with Army Nurses Corps she was stationed at Frankfurt then Stuttgart.
The Whitney family of Parowan welcomes three new grandchildren in three weeks. A 7 lb 1402 oz boy arrived Saturday at Tron County Hospital to Pi and Edith Whitney Smith of Pinatura, joining two brothers and sisters. Patricia Jean Whitney Orton, a girl, was born two days later at the same hospital to Eugene and Joey Whitney Orton. Tivwelas, three, is at home with grandmother Whitney. Grandparents are Claude Orton and others. Another birth marked the Williamson Whitney family line with a son and three sons mentioned. Wayne and Lajuana Orton Stanworth welcomed their first-born daughter at noon, six pounds. Grandparents are Scott Orton of Parowan and Otto Stanworth of Hurricane.
Merrill Thornton was taken to the county hospital Wednesday afternoon after an accident at the iron mines. He suffers multiple broken ribs and other injuries.
A church note states Parowan Ward bishoprics will be installed by January, with changes announced by Pres Howley and Pres Rowley. Ward boundaries and divisions shift, ward officials advised to allow auxiliary groups to continue until May.
The 15th century Greek drama Ingomar the Horhorion will be revived as a centerpiece of the county centennial celebration. Performances are set for January with special scenery and a cast including Mirenti, Parthronia, and Polydor. The plot follows Parthronia’s perilous choices, ransom, captivity, and a love that alters Ingomar’s fate.
