Par ent-Teachers Association Elects Officers for Year

At the first P T A meeting in the High School gym last Thursday new officers were elected for the ensuing year: Florence M. Joseph President A G Hatch Vice President Bessie Morris Secretary Treasurer. Board members are Mrs Clifford Empey Mrs Georgia Mitchell and Mr Ray D Garner. A program included a talk by A Mathe 200 and songs by Engar’s junior girls chorus.

Harrison Wins Easily in School District 5

Canvass of the school election by the Board of Education shows Hebert Harrison won re election in District 5 with 69 votes to 41 for his opponent. The board also approved a change to the holiday vacation in the school calendar.

Parowan High School A G Class Seeks Cow Testing Circle

The advanced agriculture class invites dairy farmers to join a cow testing circle. Participants will weigh and record each cow’s milk on provided cards and submit milk samples monthly for testing under advisor Mr Garner.

Baefry and Cafe Opens Under New Management

A new bakery and cafe in the Gurr building, formerly Malmbergs, opened during the week by Mrs. H Heap and her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Kirkpatrick. They start small and will serve short orders and home-made bread and pastries, with an advertisement elsewhere in the paper.

Jury Commissioners Select Jurors for 1931 Iron County

Mr. W. L. Adams of Parowan a Democrat and Mrs. Alice C. Knell of Cedar City a Republican were appointed by Judge Cox as Iron County Jury commissioners for the year. They spent yesterday at the courthouse selecting jurors for 1931. The full list will likely be published in the next issue.

County funds reallocated to job relief and school calendar revised

The board appropriated 5300 to relieve unemployment through county road work. The school calendar was changed to end the holiday break December 24 at noon and resume January 5, lengthening the vacation by one day. Committees from Cedar City Chamber and local end will oversee the relief projects, while New Harmony road funds and bank deposit security details were discussed.

Julian B. Rollins Kicked by a Horse

Jilian Rollins of this community received a badly bruised and lacerated face after a horse kicked him while he was working after wood. He lost blood before reaching a doctor but is reported to be recovering, though the injuries remain painful.

Common Clay Opens At Alladin Theatre For Fans

A film version of the Kinkead Starvard prize play Common Clay arrives at the Alladin Theatre next week with Constance Bennett and Lew Ayres in lead roles under Victor Fleming's direction. The cast also features Tully Marshall Matty Kemp and Leryl Mercer delivering notable performances.

Christmas Seals Play Part of Santa Claus in Utah

Salt Lake City reports the Tuberculosis Association’s Santa Claus marks the season as it expands this year. The group funded a summer camp, increasing participants from 32 to 49 with a target of 50 in 1931. A field nursing service aids Park City District, Beaver County, Nebo and Tintic districts, and Salt Lake County, while teachers receive health education posters and books. Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death for ages 15 to 44, despite lower overall death rates.

County Attorney Marries Cedar City Stenographer in Surprise Ceremony

County Attorney Reuben J. Shay secured a marriage license in the County Clerk's office and, with Ruth Middleton and Alex Colbath, was joined in wedlock by Bishop Mitchell. The couple planned to depart for Sterling Kansas for a honeymoon visit with Shay's mother after a noon train.

Old Time Party Planned by West Ward Society

An old time party organized by the West Ward Heller Society and the Bishopric for the worthy poor will be held Thursday Dec 18 at 8 p m in the recreation hall. The program features stunts pageantry and music followed by dancing with old time tunes. Admission is by produce of any kind or amount at the door.

Parowan residents face unemployment as Christmas nears. A school principal urges a public works fund funded by one day’s wage from employed residents. He calls a meeting for December 14 at 4 p.m. in the high school to discuss improving the town’s public grounds and school area.

Funeral Services Held for Melissa Watson

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Melissa Watson were held in St George and Parowan with speakers, mixed quartets, and readings from family and local societies. Born 1851 in California, she moved to Utah in 1857, married Lorenzo Watson in 1871, and died after a prolonged illness at 79. The obituary notes 50 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren among a large family.
