The city council at Tuesday's meeting approved a free power program for lighting outside Christmas trees on homes and businesses. Citizens may tap wires before the meter or have city workers connect lights, with the aim of boosting holiday atmosphere. A community tree may be lit at the library lawn again, with city crews planning to install wiring and lighting fixtures as soon as possible.
State Road Commission outlined how $200,000 in state road money will be distributed to Iron County and its cities from gasoline tax and auto license fees collected in 193? The allocations depend on 1930 census class B road mileage and population, with Iron County at $17,153.41 Parowan $971.25 Paragorah $233.03 Kenarra excluded pending adjustment. Funds used for county roads not in state or federal systems and for city streets.
The Parowan Ward regular conference is planned for Sunday afternoon at the ward chapel with reports from auxiliaries and ward officers to be sustained. Stake Presidency members will visit both wards and the bishopric urges strong attendance.
Barbara Adams daughter of Bishop residents Mr and Mrs Hugh L Adams is married to Forrest Dryant of Midvalley today in a ceremony at Manti Temple. The couple plan a short honeymoon then reside in Midvalley on the family farm and livestock interests. Adams, Parowan High School graduate, has been active in West Ward affairs. Dryant is a son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Bryant of Midvalley.
Funeral services for James Calvin Pendleton were held in Denver with L D S missionaries in charge. The service included songs and prayers, with burial rites by the Industrial Lodge. Pendleton, born August 1, 1888, in Parowan, had lived in Parowan before moving to Denver 17 years ago. He worked for railroads, then plumbing and contracting locally, later joining the railroad again until health forced retirement. He leaves a wife Lottie Michards Pendleton, four children, two sons Louis and Clarence, two daughters Edythe and Amy, and several brothers and sisters. He was active in Scouting and remembered for outdoor pursuits and a strong community presence.
Postmaster offers advice for holiday mailings to ensure delivery and safety. Pack and wrap parcels securely, plainly address with sender return, insure valuable items, and mail greeting cards early. Use correct postage, unsealed greeting envelopes may rate lower, and register valuable letters. For late mail, add special delivery and post during daytime hours to ease handling.
The Tessox Auxiliary will hold its regular monthly meeting Saturday evening December 17 in the Bellet room at o o’clock. A special program has been arranged and the officers urge strong attendance.
The December city council meeting discussed tree replacement funding and WPA projects for next spring, power plant strain during peak hours, Yankee Reservoir labor costs, and licensing for a roller skating rink. The Gun and Red Club received permission to late-night dancing under conditions, with routine items and budget dates noted.
Erle Bennett son of Thomas Bennett, a longtime Lakeview resident, was elected to the City Council in Lakeview Oregon on November 2. Election returns show Erle led the field for councilmen, with three other men contending for two seats. Erle and his brother Dell previously worked for a grocery chain in Oregon, leaving last March to open an independent store. Their father reports the brothers are doing well in the new venture.
Death came Thursday evening to Sarah Jane Pritchard aged 75 wife of William Pritchard after a lingering illness. Born January 31 1862 in Walsall England she married Pritchard in 1879 and emigrated to America in 1884 settling in Salt Lake City before moving to Parowan where Mr Pritchard ran a tannery. She was active in the local Relief Society serving as visiting teacher and on sewing and banquet committees until illness prevented attendance. Survived by her husband and children Sidney Pritchard Sadie McMullin Mae Cottam and Golda Foremaster with twenty grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services at East Tard chapel set for 10 o'clock Saturday morning.
The Dixie National Forest supervisor urges caution to prevent canyon damage from indiscriminate cutting. Residents should obtain permits from landowners or forest service and cut trees only under supervision to protect watershed and timber. Community cooperation is urged to minimize harm this holiday season.
A toy repair project will run in the shop department from Monday to Friday at Parowan High School. Sponsored by the F. F. A. boys under Mr. Garner and Mr. Pendleton, the free repair service covers labor, with owners paying for any needed materials.
A careful count of all outgoing first class mail at the post office indicates most mail would be delayed or unaffected by moving the departure to the evening. Salt Lake City would receive about 23 percent, Cedar City around 14 percent, and East of Colorado states about 13 percent. overall many routes would be slower or unchanged, supporting the present schedule despite interest in a change.
Notice of public hearing on Purowan City's proposed 1938 budget, set for Tuesday evening December 7, 1937 at 7:30 in the Library basement.
