Government disbursements in wages salaries and benefits totaled 282 million dollars, about 25 percent of Utah's personal income in 1954, per a Utah Foundation report. The share was nearly half again the national average, with only Virginia and New Mexico higher among states.
CSU enters December with its basketball squad trimmed to 15 under Coach Cleo Petty. The Groncos start with a Dec 2 home scrimmage at the CSU fieldhouse, facing Chaffey College followed by Campton and Tyler Junior College. Notables include Eric Clark, Vernon Roundy, and Donald Floyd among 15.
The Elders Quorum furnished the Sacrament Meeting program with Arden Richards and a ladies chorus performing. Speakers included Joe Ridley and Kent Hulet. Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Dalley celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and Mr. Dalley’s 83rd birthday. The Dalley family returned from Ogden after visiting daughters Marcella Mitchell and Letha Farnsworth and son Leland in Salt Lake City. The Joe Ridley family plans to move to Parowan for winter. Several mumps cases were reported in Summit. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Dalley hosted their family over the holiday. Kent Hulet, home with his family Oscar Hulet, teaches in Richfield. Continued to back page.
Dixie National Forest opened bids on November 21 in Cedar City for 2400 Christmas trees to be cut in various forest areas. Awards ranged from 25 to 500 trees to five bidders including Ervil Sanders LaVerkin and Frank B Lieu Henderson. No bids were received for 500 trees in Parowan Canyon.
Local and personal notes recount the November wedding of La Vee Thornton to Donald L. Sorenson at the St George Temple. Attendees include Mr and Mrs Scott Orton, and the Thornton and Sorensen families. Thanksgiving visits cover Frank Matheson and Erma with Cedar City kin, George Jewel and Edna Peterson clusters, and polio patient Virginia in Children’s Hospital improving.
Mr and Mrs Chester Hyatt and their son Blaine joined Mr and Mrs Alden Hyatt in Orderville for Thanksgiving with the De Mille family led by Or derville High School principal Mr De Mille. Bannar Stubbs and family visited Fred Harris in Beaver. Hatch families from Cedar and A Hatch group joined A C Hatch family. Joan Jerome returning from BYU joined Golden Bayles to travel to St George for Thanksgiving with Wendell Bayles family. Lloyd Davis stayed with H E Bayles. The James Mercers spent Thanksgiving in Salt Lake with Harilison family.
Mrs Celia Culver and daughter Mrs Isabelle Hardy with their San Diego kin spent Saturday with the Joseph Stevens family for the Stevenses 60th wedding anniversary. Ruth Rhoden and her daughter Flaine and grandson Dana from Roseburg Ore stopped Thursday for Thanksgiving with Mr and Mrs Roy Benson en route to California where Ruth would shop for her Oregon store. Elaine, a Wave, was returning to her base in California.
Mr and Mrs Harold Rowley of North Hollywood California visited for Thanksgiving with Mr and Mrs Thomas Rowley.
Mr and Mrs Harold Barrick and Diane Dalton of Provo spent Thanksgiving with their parents Mr and Mrs Meeks Dalton. Mr and Mrs Lewis Dalton and family moved to Norwalk California where both Lewis and Tris work. Mr and Mrs B A Halterman spent the Thanksgiving weekend in Panguitch visiting Adrian Daltons.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Stevens’ 60th wedding anniversary was honored in Salt Lake with attendees including Mr and Mrs Sydney Pritchard and families from Salt Lake City Mr and Mrs Owen Hullinger Ervin Stevens Arnold Stevens Hillman Stevens Oeden Grant Smith Phoenix Lois Bryant Cedar Paragonah Bertha Topham and others gathered last Saturday to celebrate the milestone while Joseph Stevens received visitors.
The Parowan Lions Club presented a swivel crossing sign to Parowan Schools early this week. The mobile unit, with two amber blinkers and its own battery, can be removed during school hours and on non school days. A second similar sign may be purchased for the north interstation if this one proves satisfactory. President Bryce Adams noted the sign was ordered earlier this year with hopes it would arrive before school opened.
Mitchell's Gift and Appliance store has been closed during most of the past week for remodeling. The shop has been painted and papered, with most counters removed as owners plan a larger furniture and appliance line and discontinue dime store items.
Utah Republicans announce a $100 plate Salute to Eisenhower fundraiser on January 20 at Rainbow Ranchuv in Salt Lake City. Oral J. Wilkerson, state chairman, said the event kicks off national and state fundraising for 1956 campaigns, with a closed circuit TV broadcast featuring Cabinet and Congress leaders.
Saturday evening November 26 the Paragonah School Auditorium hosted the wedding reception for Mr and Mrs Dale Robinson. The bride wore a white net gown with satin skirt and seed pearl veil, red rose bouquet. Attendants included Miss Rayma Thornton and Miss Rose Ann Barton in pastel dresses. Best man Farrel Robb, MC Ralph Edwards, and numerous relatives from Parowan Beaver Cedar City Provo Meadow Monroe and Provo attended.
Parowan High School Rams open the season with a practice game against Piute High School, announced by coach Dick Jones. The squad lists thirteen players, with two likely to be cut as final roster decisions loom.
Joseph and Alice Yardley Stevens of Parowan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Saturday November 26 with a Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner for family at Bertha Topham’s home in Paragonah. An open house followed 4 to 8 pm at the First Second Ward LDS Chapel filled with mums. They were married November 26 1893 in the St George Temple. Stevens born February 7 1873 in Parowan, son of Joseph and Lucy Stevens. He served a mission and remains active in the LDS Church.
LaRee Munford daughter of Chester Munford married Bryce H. Taylor son of Susan Taylor of Salt Lake City in a quiet home ceremony on Friday November 25. Bishop George F Rowley officiated with Doyle Taylor as best man. The couple will reside in Murray after a brief honeymoon in Las Vegas.
