Wells at Four Mile Canyon Could Tap Big Water Flow
In Parowan area long studied by R L Halterman a new driven well at Four Mile Canyon shows large underground water flows that may power irrigation and city needs. Tests with tractor and car engine pump produced 550 to 600 gallons per minute, with potential to reach 700 gallons. Halterman envisions a shaft and tunnels to crosscut Canyon and bring water to a central point for surface pumping, with a state engineer’s permit possible for six to eight feet of water. The city plans a two mile power line to the site and joint ownership with Fields, aiming to raise and use the water for plant operation and drought relief.

Destructive fire at T. W. ranch in Newcastle early yesterday morning destroyed several hay bales and damaged a large farm truck, with yard and sheds hurt. Haycock Boy Injured After Tree Fall Incident
Donald M. Haycock, young son of Mr and Mrs Donald B Haycock, fell from a large silver maple in the Dairy Co yard last Monday afternoon. He dropped about 16 feet, struck head and shoulder, fracturing skull and causing concussion. Rushed to Cedar City Hospital by Dr Wilkerson, he remains seriously injured but improving, to stay in bed about thirty days. Father abroad. unable to reach. Doctor plans an X-ray setup soon to aid diagnosis amid wartime conditions.

F W Middleton Dies From Heart Ailment
Francis Webster Middleton known as Dick, 73, died at Iron County Hospital August 17 from a heart ailment after years of illness. A Cedar City livestock trader and civic leader, he helped bring rail to Cedar City and reopen the Bank of Southern Utah. Born February 6, 1873 at Hamiltons Fort, he moved to Cedar City in 1912 and married Sarah Holland in 1896. eleven children survive. Funeral held August 19 in the First Ward chapel with Bishop H H Lunt and others delivering addresses.

W C Dalton Gets Lion Near Hendrickson's Lake
Carlyle Dalton added another notch to his lion killing tally when a two year old female lion was treed near Hendrickson's Lake. His son shot the animal from the tree after a chase. Dalton had been searching the countryside from Bear Flat toward the grade for signs of a bear and has traps set in the area. Mr and Mrs John Mortensen took twins Etta and Retta to Nilford for tonsil removal by Max Schlachter earlier in the week.

Prisoner Austin Halterman Messages From Philippine Camp
A card from Austin Halterman, a prisoner since May 7 1942 after the fall of Corregidor, was received by his wife in California. The note says he is interned at Philippine prison camp No 100 and that his health is good. He asks not to worry and hopes to come home soon, sending regards to family and friends and hoping to see Judy. This is the first contact since last December, a very happy surprise to the RK L Halterman family.

Check-up begins on auto stamp violators
Federal Internal Revenue agents conduct a preliminary survey in Parowan and outline an intensive drive to require all car owners to display the $5 use stamp on windshields. Sale of KSUB Radio Stock Approved by Commission
The Federal Communications Commission approved the sale of 50.2 percent of KSUB stock to the Radio Service Corporation of Utah, operators of KSL. Founding owner Leland M. Perry helped start KSUB.
