City Council Plans Race Meet This Fall

A special meeting decided to push ahead with a fall race meet in Parowan with county support. A committee led by C. W. Dalton and others will set dates around September 21 and 22, with August 31 to September 7 tentatively planned. Funds will come from gate receipts. later steps include purchasing equipment and powering a new well site for the facility.

Parowan Man Wins Air Corps Silver Bomber Wings

Daryl R. Halterman of Parowan has been graduated from the Deming Army Air Field Border Bombardier school earning silver bomber wings after completing an 18 week course in altitude precision bombing and aerial gunnery. Col Milton M. Murphy announced the commission and award. Halterman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Halterman. He attended local schools in California prior to the Army Air Corps.

Fraser-Wedding in Las Vegas Nevada

Mrs Edgar Benson announces the marriage of their daughter Fraser to Lieutenant Jerry with the ceremony in Las Vegas Nevada on August. The couple planned a brief visit with family before continuing, Fraser had a prior marriage and now resides in Los Angeles where her former husband died years ago. Lieutenant Davis is a navigation officer at Catalina and is assigned there. Brice Decker returned home on furlough to visit Ivan Decker and family for a few days.

Young and Stott to Be at Stake Conference

Stake President David L. Pargent announces visiting General Church authorities Elders Levi Edgar Young and C Orval Stott will attend Parowan Stake Quarterly Conference. Sessions begin 10 30 a m Cedar Third ward chapel with Priesthood meeting at 1 39 p m and second general session at 3 p m. Evening program at 7 30 features Harold S Snow and Bertrand Langford as speakers.

Stringham Wins In Run Off Election

B H Stringham Vernal Mayor won the Republican nomination for U S Congress in a Tuesday runoff defeating William Peterson of Loga n 4986 to 3075. Stringham carried most counties in the First Congressional district except Cache. He will face Walter K Granger in November. In Utahs Tenth Senatorial district Wallace Houston beat Golden W Buchanan as Sevier County backed Buchanan but the other four counties backed Houston.

Sergeant Ray Munson Undergoes Second Califormia Surgery

Sergeant Ray Munson husband of Georgia Mickelson Munson of this city underwent another operation at Birmingham Army hospital in San Fernando Valley California last week. He was wounded in Italy last February and sent home in May. A shell fragment crushed his head causing infection requiring surgery and a plate to cover the hole. His wife is with him and visits daily. A Fort Riley letter notes brother Frank in the American Paratroop forces landed in France six hours before D Day and is now in England awaiting next assignment.

Iron County Sets 1944 Tax Levy At 7.1 Mills

Iron County commissioners approve a 7.1 mill levy for 1944 up from last year by .6 mill, with state levy at 2.9 mills earmarked for school functions only. Paragonah and Kanarra towns combine to 29.0 mills and Parowan 38.1, Cedar City 58.0, while county rural property faces 25 mills plus livestock and disease control levies.

Husband of Local Girl Receives Bombardier Commission

Walter W. Stubbs learned of his son in law Eric Burehart’s graduation from the School for Bombardiers at Yeter ville California and his commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. Burehart, husband of Evadene Stubbs, graduated with class 44-11 on August 12 and will move to an advanced school for final bombardier training. Burehart’s home is Detroit Michigan. he came to Utah with CCC boys years ago and later worked for the railroad before service.

Parowan High seeks an Agricultural teacher

In town on business, School Superintendent N J Barlow says no Agricultural teacher is yet available for Parowan High. He also has no definite word on a Ladies physical education instructor. Barlow has two prospects, one in Gunnison-Sevier and one in Magna, and planned to contact them yesterday to secure a candidate.

Quentin Page Declared Dead By Navy Dept Letter

In a formal notice dated August 9 1944 the Navy informs Mr and Mrs John G Page of Parowan Utah that their son John Quentin Page Motor Machinist Mate second class USNR is presumed deceased after his ship USS LST 342 was torpedoed in the Solomon Sea July 18 1943. The letter cites twelve months in missing status and notes most survivors were rescued from the remaining section, while Page is presumed dead.

Child Narrowly Survives Rug Hook Throat Injury

Cedar City four year old Chris Parry fell while playing with a wooden crochet hook used for rug making. The hook penetrated his throat near the jugular area and was removed only after an operation. He is recovering with no infection expected. Relatives, including Minnie Lowder and Ruth Orton, traveled to Salt Lake City and Cody during the week.

Parowan Exchange Club Names New Officers

After a year with little activity the Parowan Exchange club held a supper at Five Mile camp and elected officers for the coming year. E Ray Lyman was chosen president Ivan Decker vice president and LeRoy Mortis secretary treasurer. The gathering ended with singing and stories. Supper featured goulash corn on the cob and melons served by past-president Ray Adams and others.

Road Matters Dominate Iron County Commissioners Meeting

The August session drew all commissioners and many county officials as they debated road projects. Officials pressed the State Road Commission for replies on Cedar-Long Valley, U.S. 91, Parowan Canyon, and Little Creek Bear Valley routes while promising faster action as winter approaches. The board approved funding shifts to improve Cedar Right Hand canyon, authorized a snow plow purchase, and granted $250 for Parowan Race Meet setup. The commission also raised the minimum price for county land sales from $1 per acre to deter land speculation and directed jail basement repairs.
