County Levy Passed For 1949 Tax Purposes In County
The Board of County Commissioners approved the tax levy for 1949 at 6.8 mills for county purposes, below 1948 levels by 1.64 mills. The total levy includes 1.0 mill by Iron County School District and 14.28 mills by State Tax Assessments. City levies in Paragonah and Cura increase overall city assessments, with Paragonah at 48 and Cura at 38 mills. The Hesper City levy date is pending. The meeting also hired Mullin Prince Mulliner as additional counsel to the County Attorney for a tax dispute with the Sunnabair Mining Company seeking 27,241.54 in 1948 taxes. Continued on Page Four.

Opened near St. George along U.S. Highway 91 the Auto-Vi drive in is the first of its kind in Southern Utah. Remains Of Corporal Claude Adams Identified
In a letter dated August 7, 1949 from Jane Adams to her sister, the Navy confirms the recovered remains of Corporal Claude Adams have been identified by dental and physical records. The body, previously listed as unknown X-1060 in Crypt 1345 Bay E, Hanger 812, American Graves Registration Service Mausoleum Manila Pacific, will be sent home to the family.

Personal News Notes From Utah Visits and Funeral
Mrs. Melinda Adains Morris of Salt Lake City visited Parowan with her son and daughter in law Harry and LaVel and family and friends. She also traveled to St George with Mrs. Mary Adams Snow. Her husband Joseph Stephen Morris died last month in McCammon Idaho and his body was brought to Utah for burial with interment in Portage. She plans visits in Payson before leaving the northern part of the state. Mr. and Mrs. Vene Orton of Beaver visited at Geo Stevens home to attend the funeral of Esther E. Orton. Impressive Services Held For Mrs Esther Orton
A large crowd gathered for the funeral of Esther E. Johnson Orton. Bishop W. Leonard Evans led services at Went Ward Chapel with songs and prayers. Speakers included Clair Hulet, Hugh L. Acdaima, Barbara M Adims, Zeke Johnson and Evans. Granddaughters and a grandson performed solos, and a poem was read. Burial included a grave dedication by John H. Johnson. Six of eight sons acted as pallbearers, with Don Orton leading floral arrangements among relatives and attendees from nearby communities and towns such as Tropic Cedar City Panguitch St. George and more.
