Prowan City Raises Tax Levy to 25 Mills at Special Meeting

At a Monday night council session Prowan City approved a 25 mill tax levy for the coming year, up two mills from last year to fund WPA projects. The increase funds sidewalks, street work, and irrigation, with separate allocations for general, library, school, and county purposes, totaling 1 mill higher than last year. The meeting also covered traffic signal requests, state road concerns, garbage disposal, and city superintendent bill payments before adjourning.

Cedar City Buys New Water Supply

Local Flour Mill to Operate Another Year in Parowan

Parowan Milling Company board members with the Southern Utah Dairy Co. and others agreed last weekend that the local flour mill will continue operations for another year. Joseph Tiermansen was retained for an extra year, easing reopening doubts. Financing remains unsettled, and the mill will take wheat for grinding while stock from spring and early summer remains on hand.

Impressive Rites Held For Accident Victim

Funeral services for Shhkhley Holyoak were held in the West Ward chapel last Saturday. Daniel Crawford led the rites with prayers, music, and tributes from family and friends. The ceremony honored the young man killed in a gun accident at his father's farm, followed by burial at the cemetery with pallbearers and floral tributes from relatives and neighbors.

Junior Democrats Form Temporary City Organization

Junior Toymeocrats met at the County Courthouse to establish a temporary city group with officers Bil Dalton as President Welson Adams as Vice President and Veda Mitchell as Secretary Treasurer. Delegates Buyrle H. Adams and Veda Bluchell were chosen for the State Junior Democratic League convention in Provo. A ten member entrance fee was set to affiliate with the state group and others were urged to join. Clark Lortou was hospitalized with a bad throat and quinsey.

Welfare Office Provides Older Aged Assistance Figures

Commissioner Decker reports Iron County has 291 residents over 65 with 244 on old age assistance and 23 on general welfare, 145 receive no aid. The survey shows 2 percent aid instead of the 93 percent claimed by a Salt Lake paper, prompting calls for correction.

Annual 4-H Club Outing Draws Countywide Crowd at Vermilion Castle

Clubs from nearly all communities except Paragonah gathered at Vermilion Castle Forest Camp in Parowan Canyon Tuesday afternoon for the annual 4-H outing. About 306 youths and adults arrived after one and spent the afternoon in games such as volleyball softball tennis horseshoes and hiking. A campfire program followed a group lunch but was cut short by a sudden rainstorm. The event featured a notable flag ceremony led by Marie Nelson with Fern Shipley L E Twueller Verla Platt Heber Harrison Leo Knell Horace Evans and other county leaders present. Attendees praised the camp as a beautiful venue and said they had a wonderful time.

Cedar City's tax levy remains unchanged at 19 mills

Cedar City council kept the city levy at 19 mills for several years while county and school rates rise. Within Cedar City limits the levy increases 2.37 mills overall due to county and school boosts, offset by a .13 mill state roll back, leaving a net increase of 2.37 mills.

County commissioners attend Ogden convention in Utah

Nursery School To Start August 22nd

The Iron County School District sponsors a WPA nursery school opening August 22 in the old Relief Hall. Staff includes Mrs. Ida Haltzman and Mrs. Maja Memmett, with others to be named. Capacity 25 children ages 2 to 4, daily 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through winter, with medical inspection each morning. Donations of used toys welcome.

Genealogical Society to Give East Ward Program

The Bishopric of the Paranas East Ward announces that the Genealogical Society of the West Ward will present the program at the East Ward Sacrament meeting Sunday afternoon August 14. Attendance is encouraged as the event is expected to draw a good crowd. Events include sheep and general livestock exhibits, flower show, home economics, forestry, FFA and 4 H, with a two to three day race meet, dances, a field card, and a free barbecue.
