Iron County commissioners kept total levies unchanged by reducing the county road fund and state road fund while offsetting increases in other areas. The plan preserves state and school levies near prior levels with cuts mainly in road financing and debt service.
A notice calls all people interested in dairying in the valley to convene at the courthouse Monday evening August 14 at 8 30 for forming a dairy association and to decide on a dairy show this season in connection with the Rambouillet show. Joan H Pendleton and W Scott Day urge attendance.
Fenton Mack Fenton earned the leather jacket donated by Walker Bank and Trust Co as outstanding all around athlete at the Citizens Military Training Camp finals. Elden Adams also shone, winning medals in track and boxing and helping Company A to the league title.
Parowan’s two wards will again participate in the Inter-community Chautauqua after a Chamber of Commerce meeting approved plans. Cedar City had asked Parowan to join. Bishop Adams and Bishop Mitchell will handle arrangements. A park at Cedar Breaks drew opposition and a Woolgrowers committee will report. a road construction contract was discussed with a Rowley and Adams committee appointed.
City council members at Tuesday night meeting voiced strong support for drilling a test well at the mouth of Canyon. They asked the fields committee to obtain a formal expression, while the mayor was instructed to contact committee members. The council set the current year tax levy at 24 mills with allocations for bond interest sinking fund general fund streets and sidewalks public library and a special guaranty fund.
Southern Utah Rambouillet Sheep Breeders Association officers decide to hold the annual show on Monday and Tuesday August 17 18 to fit around the National Ram sale in Salt Lake City. The event aims for low expense and a quiet, competitive atmosphere with ribbons for four places per class and a potential luncheon. Dairy cattle exhibit planned with valley interests invited. George A Lowe fills vacancy on the board after Clarence Richards death.
Benj Cameron Jr notes a 1931 Utah publicity effort by Cactus Kate and Earl C Anthony Inc to promote Southern Utah highways and Beanie archeology. The mission features trips through Wayne Wonderland Sanpete Sevier Garfield counties Monument Valley and San Juan ruins with broadcasts across California Colorado Arizona and Utah.
James Robinson and Jos. B. Dalton lead a Woolgrowers Association committee to rally support in Salt Lake City and Ogden for a proposed Cedar Breaks national park. They warn 16 500 sheep and 600 cattle would lose grazing, threatening local livelihoods and estimated financial losses across lambs wool and cattle prices.
Delegates from Post No. 20 were chosen at a 4 a m meeting in the city office for the Legion convention to be held in Park City on the 13th to 15th. Ten names were listed including A Slateh Durham Morris J L Topham T A Tophar Sasti Matheson BGam Matheson Harrell Dalton Clair Titowley Ed ward G Matheson and Alvin Decker. Five delegates and five alternates were selected though assignments were not announced. Mrs Morris is the only wife not stepping in as delegate or alternate to the Auxiliary convention at the same time and place.
Jr and Mrs Joseph Stevens travel with daughters Maria and Violet to Yellowstone Park during Stevens absence. Woodruff Pendleton tends the milk wagon while they are away.
Wm J Lowder, local trapper for the Biological Survey, won the target shooting championship and a $3 prize at the Fish Lake convention. The event drew competitors from many states with visitors from Denver and Washington, D C. Mrs Lowder accompanied him and praised the resort work by Mr Shougard.
Marriage licenses were issued by the Clerk's office during the week to John W Anderson 39 Ogden and LaVon Shurtz 27 Escalante Howard Barl Dorst 27 and Martha Hauserman 22 Salt Lake City.
Stockholders of the Southern Utah Dairy Co. received a year end report showing growth in business and increased assets. The meeting noted progress on a partially paid building, about $30,000 spent on milk and cereal, and board reappointments including Pendleton Topham and Stevens. A new committee was named to study dairy stock improvements and future policies were left to the board.
Thirty five jurors for the August term of the District Court convening August 11 were drawn on Judge Cox orders. The list includes jurors from Parowan Cedar City Summit Paragonah and Kanarra with names such as W Leonard Evans Maude Dalton Gwen Gurr Mary Adams H D Bayles Joseph Ward Vergené Simkina Samuel Jones George Mitchell Elizabeth R. Iron County senior district schools will open September 14 after a Board of Education decision. Principal meetings occur September 11 in Cedar City with a teachers institute on the 12th. The calendar shows a short holiday break and various holidays observed with district reforms.
