Local Men Escape Serious Injuries in Truck Accidents
Jess Guymon and his nephew Jim Guymon survived a rear tire blowout that overturned their truck near Mud Springs, tipping the load of cattle and horses but leaving them with minor injuries. Vern Mortensen and son Clifton suffered two broken ribs and a lacerated hand when their pickup rolled near Dry Canyon, while Ralph Mortensen and Fred Nixon escaped with only bumped heads.

Last Rites For Victim Of Gun Tragedy
Funeral services were held for Melburn Webb Barton a 26 year old former local resident who died from a selfinflicted head wound in Henderson Nevada. He was discovered on the Marvin Skougard doorstep and pronounced dead shortly after. Barton a Navy veteran who served in the Pacific during World War II was born May 18 1928 in Parowan. He was employed by Pioche Manganese at the time of his death. Continued on back page.

The Iron County Rest Home in Parowan debuts after years of effort, costing $200,000. An open house is planned for Saturday August 7 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The modern facility houses 75 to 100 guests in ground floor units with private baths, built-in closets, and a central call system. Mortensens Welcome Home Servicemen Families Gather
Master Sgt. Jack Mortensen and wife Linda return from France after three years overseas. They toured Europe with Lloyd, visited New York City, and Linda’s mother in New Mexico before homeward stops in Parowan. Jack will serve as Supply Instructor at Fort Warren AFB in Cheyenne Wyoming. Pvt Richard B Whitney, Parowan Utah, graduated from the 2nd Infantry Division Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Korea after enlisting in December 1953 and joining the 2nd in June.

Ten year old Polio scare at Duck Creek outing
Lee Arlen Topham, son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Topham, fell ill at a 4H Campfire program near Duck Creek and was rushed to Salt Lake City by ambulance. Doctors diagnosed a mild polio affecting knee and back muscles. His fever subsided and he was to return home soon with home exercises. Mrs Topham stayed with sister-in-law Mildred Carlson in Salt Lake City.

Iron County Commissioners tentatively set the 1954 tax levy for county purposes at 6 mills, a approximate reduction from last year driven by lower county road and indigent levies with small rises in the general fund. The breakdown shows General 2.06, Roads 1.20, Indigent 0.49, Hospital 1.00, Library 1.00, Airports 0.10, County Recreation 0.20 mills, with final total awaiting state and municipal levy figures and other cities’ reports. Cedar City at 26.3 mills remains unchanged from 1953, Parowan at 21 mills, and others pending.
