Second Hand Clothes Drive Planned For Next Week
The American Legion and Auxiliary will lead a state wide campaign to gather usable second hand clothing and shoes for Russia. Local volunteers, including Boy Scouts, will collect and pack items starting Wednesday at 6 PM, with drop offs on doorsteps or in the basement of the church. Post Commander Lorin Orton and Edna Hatch supervise, with a packing crew led by Mr and Mrs Alvin Decker and a canvassing committee headed by Taylor ER.

Ron County Assessed Valuation Increases Noted
Iron County officials report total assessed valuation for 1944 at 9,998,616 up from 9,521,468 last year with public utility and other minor assessments pushing county totals above ten million. City valuations include Parowan 56,932 Cedar City 2,002 Kanarra 42,314 and Me district 2,362,197 plus utilities 4,872,011. Two Parowan patients at the county hospital were operated on last weekend and recovering well. Kenneth Bayles infant son of Mr and Mrs Bayles underwent hernia repair while Martha Phillips daughter of Mr and Mrs Oliver Phillips had acute appendicitis operation performed within minutes.

Parowan Posts Record Fifth War Bond Drive Total
Parowan reports a Fifth War Loan Drive total of 45,156.25 with 25,762.50 invested at the post office and 19,393.75 in Bank of Southern Utah funds. E bonds totalled 29,531.25 and other securities 15,625. Parowan surpassed Garfield and Kane counties, with higher post office receipts than Panguitch and Kanab, and more than Kane county’s allotment. The drive is hailed as a strong effort with potential follow ups before year’s end.

Social to Honor Departing Inductees Next Week
A farewell social in honor of departing inductees will be held Tuesday evening in the West ward chapel and recreation hall, starting at 9 15. Farm Bureau officials visit Iron County
W. W. Owens of the Utah State Farm Bureau Executive committee and Frank A. Shelley, federation executive secretary, visited Iron County to discuss farm labor. They suggested solutions for harvest season, including Mexican workers, prisoners of war, or Navajo Indians, and partnering with the County Agent to survey needs. Schools might be asked to arrange vacation periods to aid harvest labor.

Adams Family Observes Mother's Birthday Trip to Mammoth
The Adams family celebrated Mrs. Mabel Adams's birthday with an all day Mammoth trip. Out of town relatives gathered for the first time in twenty years. They visited Castle Valley for lunch horseback riding and wading, then stopped at the old Adams ranch for supper and Cedar Breaks at sunset before returning down Parowan Canyon. One daughter Mrs. Vera Showalter could not attend due to being unreachable at a ranch beyond the Mammoth.

Bee Hive Outing Proves Outstanding Success
The Bee Hive Mothers and Daughters outing at the Five Mile camp on Tuesday and Wednesday drew about fifty girls and leaders plus two visiting mothers. Highlights included stories by Mrs. Gayle Morris and Barbara M. Adams, a campfire supper with 23 guests, a sunrise service, and a treasure hunt. Florence and Yvonne were briefly hurt but received care, and the event was deemed a success with plans to make it an annual three day outing.

Center Creek Water Users Vote To Form Corporation
Center Creek water users at a Wednesday meeting voted to form a corporation to control distribute and develop the water supply. Articles of incorporation were available but not signed due to time. The city will not join. The meeting discussed a well at Forbay and Patowan City with R L Halterman reporting 120 feet drilled with gravel and strong water indicators. After drilling, tests and a test pumping were planned, with a permanent pump and power line contemplated if results meet expectations.

Road Engineer Injured In Cedar Canyon Car Crash
Roy McLeese district engineer for the State Road Commission is hospitalized in Iron County with a fractured neck vertebra from a Saturday night accident in Cedar canyon. His condition is satisfactory, likely long wearing a neck brace. Three companions escaped with minor bruises. The crash occurred after the State Traffic Patrol car skidded off the road two miles from Cedar City, the vehicle nearly demolished. Watson Adams freed others and sought help. Iron County Record reports the incident.

About 135 Boy Scouts from eight towns in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona to the number of 11 troops closed a four day Duck Creek camp last Friday.
