Fans packed the high school gym for a Chamber of Commerce and Firemen tribute to Parowan's 43-4 season. The event featured a fire truck ride, awards for coach Bruce Decker, the team, and manager, and a speaker line praising youth as a goal for the community.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an immunization clinic in Parowan next week for whooping cough tetanus diphtheria and smallpox. Mrs. Whit Orton says the clinic opens at 10 am Wednesday in the Iron County Court House with booster shots available separately and smallpox given independently under the County Health department.
Local residents seeking help with alcoholism invited to an open Parowan AA session in the Iron County Court House Court Room at 8 p.m. The event features Clyde Gooderham and other speakers from Southern Utah and seeks to share information without lectures or sales pitches.
The Par ewan First Ward Scout Troop 841 hosts a Court of Honor in Ward Chapel Sunday at 7 p.m. Scoutmaster Veron Decker announces several awards for troop and Guide Scout members. Roy F. Hatch, local seminary principal, will be guest speaker. Public invited.
Mrs Rebecca Ann Carson Miller turns 80 with an open house Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at her daughter Berniece Evans home in Parowan. no gifts requested. Miller known as Aunt Becky, active in LDS Church, long time Parowan resident born April 26, 1874 in Washington County. She knitted socks, crocheted stoles, quilts and travels.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Dalton celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Tuesday April 27 Invitations invite calls between 2:00 and 8:00 Open House will honor the couple at their family home Dalton born Paragonah May 2 1875 and married Nellie Reese on April 27 1904 the pair later settled in Paragonah where Dalton farmed Nellie born July 28 1884 near Greenville Utah the couple have deep roots in Beaver and surrounding towns with many friends expected to attend the celebration.
Howard M Adams was named Bishop of the Parowan Third Ward to succeed Earl O Mitchell who led the ward for over six years. Adams and his counselors W Grayson Gurr and HO Marvin tiaft won sustaining votes at Ward Conferences. Other members include Arnold 0 Gurr and Lyle Evans. Clare Hulet was abstaining as Ward Clerk but may be replaced. Adams had been a Seventy of the 69th Quorum and resigns as Ward YMMLA president.
Isabelle Ward Mortensen longtime Parowan resident known as Aunt Lazy died in her sleep at home early Sunday after a long illness. Born July 17 1872 in Parowan she married Joseph Ed gar Mortensen in 1898. She leaves eight children 28 grandchildren and several great great grandchildren with funeral services held Wednesday in Parowan Third Ward.
The Parowan High School Alumni Association announces plans for a Memorial Day weekend homecoming on May 29. Activities include a rabbit hunt, a 2 30 p.m. assembly, a banquet at 7 p.m., and a 9 p.m. dance led by president Kenneth Joseph. An open house in the Old Rock Church relic hall offers non-hunt attendees access to the relic hall.
Larry King and Jim Miller won the top student body posts in a Thursday primary run-off at the high school. Jackie Ward Ronald Mortensen Pegey Mitchell Mary Etta Stubbs and Susan Benson Victor Norman advanced to the next round. the final election is planned for next Friday with an 9 a.m. rally after a week of campaigning.
Mrs Sherwin Benson hosted YMV Club members for an evening of visiting and sewing with refreshments. Tri H Club discussed cerebral palsy causes and cures and considered Federated Clubs membership. Foster egg hunt plans finalized for April 29 at Mrs Willard Decker. Etta Averill honored with a birthday visit by fourteen friends. Francis Parkinson Keys novel Came the Cavalier reviewed by Mrs Claude Lister at Parowan Literary Club. Mrs Clair Hulet presided as 15 members attended. Next meeting postponed to May 12 to enable members to attend events.
Parowan City reports major beautification of the cemetery over several years. About 542 plots have been planted to grass with cooperation from plot owners and relatives, funded by nominal maintenance fees. May 1 is the payment deadline. failure to pay will halt further care of the lots.
Older residents of Parowan Stake will enjoy an afternoon program and social this Saturday at the Parowan First Ward Church. A luncheon will follow at 4 p.m. Transportation is available from all areas upon request to ward representatives Mr and Mrs A Bain Matheson, Mr and Mrs Loris B Orton, Mr and Mrs Ralph O Mitchell, Mr and Mrs Arie Williams, Mr and Mrs Herbert D White, and Mr and Mrs George A Topham.
A leadership meeting for the Parowan Stake will be held Monday April 26 at 7 p.m. in the Parowan First and Second Ward Chapel. A special call is made for attendance by all attendance secretaries and other officers and class leaders.
W Leonard Evans announces the arrival of a granddaughter on April 13 at Iron County Hospital. The eight pound eleven ounce girl is born to Ora and Lucile Evans Hofbeins of Beaver. She follows three sisters Janet Joyce Betty and a brother Bernell. Paternal grandmother Mrs Jane Hofbeins and great grandmother Mrs Martha Morgan live in Beaver. Also welcomed by Bobbie M Stubbs is their first daughter born at Iron County Hospital weighing six and a half pounds. Michael awaits his mother and new sister mustering excitement. Gratitude is given to Wilcock Alma Stubbs and Edmund Stevens as honored relatives.
Parowan named as site for its first mental health clinic on May 5 and 6 with four experts to speak and advise. The program includes general psychiatry, marriage counseling, adolescent guidance, a film on Shyness, and discussions led by local moderators. A visiting consultant will work with Cedar City attendees as well.
Coach Decker and six track men travel to Provo for the Junior division of the BYU Invitational meet facing schools statewide. Competitors are Stewart Adams Jim Burt Allan Dalton Don Halterman Roy Orton and Jim Talbot. They trained since basketball season ended and will return to practice for the Regional meet on May 7.
Plans for the Western Division of the Association of Bank Women spring meeting at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco April 22 to 25 are nearing completion. Attendees include executive women from banks across California and neighboring states. Regional VP Lillian Dolde will lead a banquet with Association President Ruth E. Sherrill as featured speaker.
Gene Orton announces the Blood Mobile Unit will be at Parowan High School shop department Monday May 3 from 6 pm to 9 pm. A quota of 125 donors is set for the area. Volunteers, including local ladies clubs, will canvass homes early next week to help meet the goal. Contact Mr. Orton at 3352 to donate a pint.
All students from Parowan Junior and Senior High will perform in a Dance Review in the gym Friday April 30 under instructor Mrs Shirley Stott. The program features folk tap ballroom and creative dances with seventh grade boys and girls performing a ballroom waltzing demonstration. Students wear costumes designed for the numbers. Public attendance is invited and parental support is hoped to encourage future participation. Accompanists Vanda Mitchell and Barbara Bayles assist.
All members and prospective members of the Red Hill Wranglers Saddle Club are reminded that 1954 membership fees are now due and payable. It will be greatly appreciated if those who have not paid will do so promptly to prepare the roster for the coming year. An invitation is extended to anyone over six years of age who is interested to join the club.
