Lt Leonard Hulet Killed In Action In Germany

News from the War Department confirms the death of Lt. Leonard Elliott Hulet in Germany during World War II. A glider pilot who participated in D-Day, he served in the 8th Air Corps First Airborne Army, advancing from Normandy to Southern France and Germany. Born June 30, 1919 in Parowan, he had a long training path across multiple bases before overseas duty. He is survived by his parents, five brothers serving abroad, three sisters, and a grandmother. Memorial services are planned for Sunday at 3:30 PM at the Westward Hospital, with ward choirs on the stand. The list of prospective Cedar City Agricultural College graduates was released, including Parowan students. Commencement is set for Friday May 18.

County to convert Orton residence into old folks home

Iron County Public Welfare announces the Orton residence will become a county old folks home. Commissioner I E Riddle county clerk W Cish Rowley and County Attorney Durham Morris led the purchase and will oversee timing and renovations with a $5000 budget and possession around June first.

Reports Highlight Exchange Club Luncheon Program

At the Exchange club luncheon several reports were heard from County Weed Inspector Maylin Max on this summer’s weed control, District Road Engineer Flack and Warren H. Bulloch on the road program, Marlo Topham on city beautification, and L. J. Adams on a national auto brake testing campaign. W. Clair Howley announced upcoming lyceum numbers and a road meeting was noted for Thursday. Cpl Grayson Gurr of the RAF base in Las Vegas visited home with his parents over the weekend.

Committees Named for Iron County Fair in Parowan

A general meeting set dates for the Iron County Fair to be held August 30 to September 1 in Parowan. B L Fenton names subcommittees across crops horticulture livestock and arts with chairmen and members from local clubs agencies and the BAC. A Race Meet committee is also formed to fund racing once bans are lifted.

B A C Director Oberhansley Dies In Cedar City

Henry Ernest Oberhansley aged 59 longtime director of the Branch Agricultural College at Cedar City and first principal of Parowan High School died in his sleep Friday at his Cedar City home after leaving work Thursday noon. Funeral services were held in Cedar City with speaking roles by U S A C figures, burial at Payson, and survivors including his widow Salome Barney Oberhansley and one son Victor Curtis Oberhansley in the military.

East Ward Relief Society Invites Members for Quilting Day

Mrs Nellie H Bentley of the East Ward Relief Society presidency calls all members to aid officers next Tuesday morning in the Relief Society room. An urgent amount of extra quilting must be done, bring a sandwich and stay for the day. The officers will provide a warm drink.

West Ward Primary Conference Set For Sunday

The regular West Ward Primary Association Conference will be held Sunday afternoon, April 15, at 2 o'clock as part of the Sacramento meeting. Former Resident Viola Stephens Dies in Evansville Indiana

John V. Stephens of Evansville Indiana reports the death of his wife Viola Stephens in March. The couple had lived in Parowan Utah years ago where Stephens did painting before returning to Indiana. Friends in Parowan regret her passing and recall their long residence and ties to the community.

Post War Road Committee Submits County Plan

Iron County post war road program presented to the county board outlines a three year build out with an estimated 1 446 000 expenditure. Projects include Paragonah Orton to highway 91, Parowan Canyon oiling, Cedar City to Modena and multiple gravel and oil standard upgrades across the region. Local and state agencies will share cost with federal funds at roughly 28 5 percent local and 71 6 percent federal.

Legion and Auxiliary Plan Monday Night Meeting

Parowan Post No 20 American Legion and Legion Auxiliary announce a joint luncheon meeting at Taylor cafe next Monday evening. Edna S. Tateh of the Auxiliary urges all Legionnaires, Auxiliary members, partners, and local veterans to attend. Luncheon at 11 o’clock followed by talks on Selective Service by W. Parowan East ward bishopric announces that Stake high Council members will speak at the Sacrament meeting next Sunday at 2 PM. Speakers include W. Clair Rowley Leonard Evans and W. Leonard Evans. Canning sugar blanks sent to Porowan and Paraganzh families

The Ration Office will distribute 1935 home canning sugar application blanks to every family in Porowan and Paraganzh within days. Complete and return the forms to the Ration office by May 1. If any family misses the April 21 distribution, they can pick up blanks at the Ration Board office.
