First to land in Japan after Luzon campaign
A letter from Cloyd Vallentine, written Sept 6 1945 in Yokohama, describes the march from Luzon to Okinawa, then to Japan. He recalls flying in C 47s and C 54s, suffering plane losses, living in pup tents in rain and mud, subsisting on canned K rations, and helping seize Japanese vehicles for a motor pool. He witnessed General MacArthur and allied generals arriving to sign the peace treaty, as his division served as honor guard. He notes heavy guard duty and fatigue, with hopes to return home soon.

Former Aged Paris Man Dies in Salt Lake
William N. B. Shepherd aged 91 of Salt Lake City died Monday morning. He worked with ZCMI since 1911 and earlier served in Idaho politics and LDS church organizations. Survivors include his widow, ten children, fourteen grandchildren, and a brother and sister. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Salt Lake City with burial in the Salt Lake cemetery.

Chicago probate genealogist Walter C. Cox seeks the grandchildren of 19th century German immigrants Henry and Lena Mathwig to claim a 150000 dollar estate. The Mathwigs disappeared after 1870 from Ripon Wisconsin and likely settled in the northwest, complicating the search from the Dakotas to Oregon and Washington.

They continued on to Idaho Falls Thursday morning, where they went through the temple and returned home that night.
