Fielding High will open the football season Thursday afternoon with a practice game against Logan High on the local gridiron. Coach Willmore lists an inexperienced squad with only one returning letterman, Reed Jensen, and a large freshman-like group training at ends backs and linemen.
Fire siren sounded last Friday afternoon as a hay shed on the Smediey property near Center and Main Streets burned. The blaze destroyed the structure and several tons of wild hay. Owners George and Clifford Price stored hay there. Local report attributes the fire to boys playing with matches.
Idaho reports a season crowd similar to the 1946 peak as trout season runs June through October. License data by Fay Bussard show 116,608 total sales last year, with 15,775 current license holders and 6,331 non residents buying season licenses plus 14,401 five day licenses, while prices rose under the recent Legislature.
Fred Derricott and his son Gordon of Pocatello attended funeral services for Mrs. Oliza Shepherd on Friday evening. Mrs. Derricott and son Robert returned home Saturday evening.
The Bear Lake Stake MIA sponsors a youth program in the stake tabernacle Sunday at 8 p.m. Guest speaker Joy A Welker, former Bear Lake stake president and long time educator, will address attendees. Musical numbers are planned and the hour long event precedes a conference. The public is invited.
Mrs Amy Rosetta Stock Roberts aged about 86, a Bear Lake county pioneer for 75 years, died in Montpelier. Funeral services were held in Fish Haven ward chapel with Bishop Owen Stock presiding and a program of musical numbers and speakers. She was born in London and moved to Fish Haven at age 11, later living in Montpelier. she taught school and music and was a member of the LDS church. Surviving children include George P Stock of Montpelier, E. W Roberts of Camp Lejeune, Ruby Moliwain of Montpelier, and L. G Roberts of Pocatello, plus 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Her first husband Richard P Stock died in 1887. second husband Wm J Roberts died about 25 years ago.
Carlson Beck brothers and Matthews brothers of Ovid and Liberty, prominent breeders, consign several pens of rams to the fall ram sale at Pocatello on Saturday Sept 27. The event features Hampshires Suffolks Suffolk-Hampshires Corriedales Panamas Columbias Romneys and Lincoln Rambouillet s. From 52 Idaho breeders the 700 rams constitute a major statewide showing of purebreds.
The first PTA gathering was held at Emerson school on a Wednesday evening. President Mrs Dortha Hann led, with "America" sung by the audience and minutes read by secretary Beth West. Treasurer's report by Mrs Amber Goebel and an accordion solo by Edward Wren followed.
Elden Skinner 22 of Conda was killed at 2:30 PM last week in the Anaconda Copper Mining Co mine at Conda. He stepped on loose muck while measuring for timber. a piece of mined rock struck him, causing a basal skull fracture and neck fracture. He served in the armed forces 1943 46 and married Jeane Smedley in 1944. Funeral held at LDS church in Conda.
Mr and Mrs Dale W Lauritzen have moved back to Pocatello Idaho and enrolled at Idaho State College. Mr Lauritzen enters his second year in pre medicine and Mrs Lauritzen begins as a freshman at the college.
Mrs Hortense Bunn and Connie returned Saturday night from six weeks visiting daughters and sons in law Olen Mc Combs and Jim Fitzgerald and their families in Lodi California and Los Angeles They will be remembered as Wilma and Rhea Bunn In Los Angeles they attended the radio program Bride and a Groom in Hollywood.
Howard R Low will present three piano concerts this week with performances in Montpelier Paris and Soda Springs The Paris program Friday at 8 15 features Part I and Part II works by Grieg Chopin Monteverde and others moving to a Liszt Liszt Concerto No 2 in C minor and Rachmaninoff with Ruby Bolton at the second piano.
Bear Lake County 4 H Livestock Judging team placed second at the Blackfoot Fair against southeastern Idaho counties. Members Mariel Skinner Kay Bartschi and Gerald Skinner belong to Noonan 4 H Livestock Club led by Lester Skinner. County Agent Willard Kunz praises the group for outstanding 4 H work and lists numerous awards won by club members in Clothing Nutrition and Canning divisions.
Dinner guests Monday at the Walter Bird home included Mr and Mrs Sam V Tunks and son Phillip of Montpelier and Homer Tunks of Portland Oregon. The occasion honored Mr Bird's birth anniversary.
Mr and Mrs M D Low and their son Howard have returned from Salt Lake City and taken an apartment at the Smith Hoge residence. Howard will give a piano recital here Friday evening in the 2nd ward chapel.
Eliza Ann Lewis Shepherd a Paris native dies Sept 10 after a long illness. She married Ernest Shepherd in 1894 and lived in Paris, later in the Paris first ward. Surviving are five children, 18 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several Lewis brothers. Funeral services were held at the Bear Lake stake tabernacle with burial in Paris cemetery.
Mrs Darwin Haddock was in Bloomington last Tuesday afternoon visiting relatives. She Drienced no public events, and the social call appeared to focus on family ties and local greetings.
Mr and Mrs C C Stauffer returned to their Onaga Kansas home Friday after visiting Mrs Almira Stauffer and baby at the Collings residence. They plan to spend the winter in Onaga.
The literary club was entertained August 27 by Melinda Sparks. Carol Ward reviewed the book Three Came Back to Anona Grandy Bertha Hoge Lillias Grimmett Lark Bateman Ethel Jensen Pauline Cox Jean Kunz Amy Athay and guests Lucille Spencer Dortha Hann Mabel Athay Vivian Spencer and the hostess.
Idaho pheasant season runs November 1 through 11 in most districts with a noon start on opening day. Bag limits are two cock pheasants statewide, three in the southwestern district, and Bear Lake county remains closed. Shotguns only. rifles prohibited.
Montpelier beat St Anthony 18 to 0 in the opener as the Bears gained momentum in the second quarter and found success in the last three periods. St Anthony’s heavy line couldn’t match Montpelier’s faster backs though the home line showed weakness early with little practice ahead of a hopeful season.
Arthur Shepherd of Paris origin is profiled in Composers in America by Claire Rels. The piece notes Juilliard and SPAM awards, Paderewski Prize, and three National Federation prizes. His works have been performed in Europe and the U S as he works on a Violin Concerto and a Fantasy for Orchestra.
Fielding chapter of Future Farmers of America opened the year with a Sept 12 visit to the Idaho State Fair in Blackfoot. Thirty-five boys traveled by bus and judging teams entered Livestock and Dairy judging. FFA officers for the year are Reed Jensen president Murry Matthews vice president Max Vallentine secretary Dale Beck treasurer Harold Mborn reporter Gene Findlany seminal.
Mr and Mrs W. Smith Hoge traveled to Montpelier on Thursday to attend the wedding and reception of former June Straw who became the wife of Bill Horsley.
Enrollment for 1947-48 reaches just over 400 students with Fielding High School at 200 plus in 1946 gains. Emerson Grade School lists 205 pupils across grades one to seventh, including 3 in the highest grade. Fielding class officers are elected with seniors and juniors naming presidents and treasurers. A Hello Evening get acquainted party is planned Friday to ease student tensions.
County fair exhibit winners listed for multiple categories including thoroughbred stallion, senior bulls and heifers, fat calves, and various horses and ponies. Names include Ivan K Rigby Pegram and Don Rex Georgetown among many exhibitors with prizes ranging from $3 to $35. Continued on page 4.
Misa Mignon Shepherd of the University of Chicago travels with three companions through the Black Hills. She visits Mrs. Rae Lowe in Pocatello, who then escorts her to Paris for a week at the home of Mrs. Margaret Athay and other relatives and friends.
