Edwin E. Anderson, Navy boiler man second class and son of St Charles residents, returned August 26 to Long Beach aboard the heavy cruiser USS Bremerton after a seven month Far East tour. The ship visited Auckland Singapore Manila Hong Kong Yokosuka and Koe ling Formosa and took part in fleet maneuvers during the summer.
State Senator Max Hanson ends bid for governor and urges Democrats to back winner A M Derr who led Hanson by 122 votes in a tight Democratic primary. Derr supports legalized casino style gambling on a local option basis.
Extensive oil and gas leasing by Amerada Petroleum in Bear Lake county over the past year has drawn other leasers to southern Idaho. The State Land Board approved about 6 000 acres of leases for oil and gas rights in nearby counties while deferring a 15 000 acre Bear Lake bed lease by Sinclair Oil and Gas to determine state ownership. Applicants include Gene Trowbridge Casper Thomas Strock Casper F M Hulett Denver David Gancheff Trenton Eric Lindblom Logan and Don Wilson Logan.

The football schedule begins September 6 at Soda Springs with league games listed through October. Between 20 and 30 boys are out for football this year.
Harley Cochran, chair of the Bear Lake County ASC, outlined steps for farmers to enroll land in the Soil Bank. Farmers must request rate establishment by October 10, supply acreage and yield data, and return the application by October 24. Eligible lands include cultivated crops and tame hay.
Elmo R. Stgan, business vice-president of the University of Utah since 1963, is named director of highways for the Utah State Road Commission. A former Bear Lake valley resident, Morgan is the son of J. S. Morgan of Liberty and a Fielding High School graduate. He earned a civil engineering degree from Utah State University at Logan and has worked in the state engineer's office and at Los Alamos with the Atomic Energy Commission.
Over Labor Day the U S death toll reached 420 with Idaho adding eight fatalities the highest for the state. Idaho 174 traffic deaths this year exceed 127 at the same point last year. The Idaho Traffic Safety Division urges motorists to slow down frequent stops courtesy obey local speed limits and use proper lighting and passing practices to reduce fatalities.
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie S. A search by Salt Lake and Ogden divers failed to locate Fred H. Drake 31 who disappeared in Bear Lake the previous Sunday. Sheriff Lutz indicated further recovery efforts would be limited to local shore patrols and nearby waters while the body remains weighted with 18 pounds of lead and gear.
The Northern District Wool Growers Auxiliary hosted a lamb barbecue at Hidden Valley Lodge near Laketown last Wednesday. President Mrs. Keith Johnson presided with entertainment by ventriloquist Miss Trudy Tufts and the Montpelier Lions Club trio. Special guests included Mrs. Delbert Chipman and state Auxiliary President Mrs. Thornley Swan, with their husbands. The group sponsors the Make It Yourself With Wool contest to promote sewing with wool.
