Montpelier Deer Hunter Dies of Heart Attack
L. E. Dixon 56 a Montpelier resident since 1935 died of a heart attack while deer hunting near Montpelier last Saturday forenoon. He was found ill by Allen Dunn and was taken to Bear Lake Memorial Hospital where he died about 10:45 am. Dixon a Union Pacific dispatcher born April 30 1902 in Duncan Missouri is survived by his wife Elaine two daughters five brothers and one sister. Services were held Tuesday at the Montpelier Second Ward chapel with interment in Montpelier cemetery. This was Bear Lake county’s first deer hunting fatality from a heart attack since Mossah Booth died November 1 1945.
Fielding FFA Wins Gold Emblem Award
The Fielding Chapter of Future Farmers of America earned the national Gold Emblem Award the top honor for FFA chapters in the United States. Idaho sent two chapters to the national contest in years past, Fielding among them, with previous awards including bronze and silver. Rodney and Rae Vallentine traveled to Kansas City to accept the award after a weeklong trip.

Forest fires in area cause some work
Forest firefighters from the Paris ranger station assisted last weekend at Logan canyon where several hundred acres burned, and again at St Charles canyon where a small timber blaze covered a couple acres. A Montpelier canyon fire near the Rod and Gun club cabin burned 30 to 40 acres before control was reached.

Fielding Spartans Run Past North Cache for 46 25
Fielding High Spartans won 46 to 25 over North Cache in a high scoring game at Hyrum. Doug Price sparked the win with a 55 yard TD run on a trick play and an 85 yard kickoff return TD. The Spartans travel to Pocatello to face the JV team. this was their final game of the schedule.

Man Arrested in Calf Theft Charge in Geneva
Sheriff O E Monson arrested Lyman Hirschi of Geneva for possessing two calves not his own after cows were moved to pasture. He was bound over to district court on grand larceny charges with $2,000 property bonds. One calf belonged to E C Reech of Dingle and the other to Ray Widmer of Geneva.

Valley deer hunters out early in season
Valley residents and visitors propelled by the hunt last Saturday morning with deer and elk taken early. Checking stations at Ovid Montpelier and Soda Springs logged 18 deer and one elk, 65 deer and 18 elk, and a missing count respectively. Biologists request lower jaws for age studies, to be left at stations or local contacts.

Pheasant Hunting Season Opens Across Idaho Areas
Hunters from Benewah County to Idaho open the pheasant season at noon this Saturday October 25. The season lasts about 80 days in most southwestern and southern counties while eastern Idaho ends a week earlier. Daily bag remains three roosters with six cock pheasants possession after day one. Hen pheasants remain closed. Hungarian partridge quail and chukar also open with set bag limits.
