Merlin Eborn won the first prize, a Sunbeam frying pan, in a Monday evening drawing at Lowe Drug Store in Paris. Forty other prizes were awarded to a list of entrants including John Payne Alfred Keetch Cliff Minson Mrs Leroy Hirschi Darlene Payne Alto Payne and many more with James Hawkes the store manager praising the response.
Kay and Beth Allred announce the purchase of Sparks Jewelry in Montpelier from Mr. and Mrs. Sparks. Kay Allred, a former infantryman and horology graduate, brings two years of watch and jewelry repair training and past work in Idaho, Logan, American Falls, and Provo. The family plans to reside at 2 North Fifth Street in Montpelier.
Clifford Skinner a Dingle rancher and LDS ward bishop suffered the loss of his right arm in a Saturday morning combine accident near his home. He was treated at Bear Lake Memorial hospital in Montpelier after the incident and is reported to be recovering as neighbors take over ranch tasks. He is married to Arthur Eborn’s daughter and brother-in-law to Mrs. Hugh Shepherd of Paris.
Blake Jensen bought Keith Warner’s Main Street residence in Paris and resold a ten foot strip to Ralph Rich. Rich uses the extra footage to enlarge a five unit motel project, shifting plans to the south for a larger driveway. Foundation and plumbing work are underway ahead of concrete lay.
The Idaho deer and big game season opened with good success for most hunters though weather limited hunting in some areas. Rain and snow reduced fire danger. southeastern Idaho hunters reported fair meat takes while Bear Lake hunters sought their first deer or elk. Moose hunting faced tougher conditions as storms pushed animals into heavy timber. Violations in September led to 110 arrests for fish and game law breaches, with fines up to 150 dollars for illegal elk and 100 dollars for false license statements.
Tomorrow Friday October 18 Logan Temple day for the Bear Lake County Stake invites members to attend as a matter of importance per the stake office announcement.
County assessors of 44 counties along with the Idaho Tax Commission met at Shore Lodge in McCall to announce that state property valuations would remain essentially unchanged from last year. J Warren Sirrine Bear Lake attended on legislative and land and building committees. Ray Dyer Lincoln retires as president. Floyd Betts Payette elected. Island Park Fremont county will host next year at Mack's Lodge with headquarters at the lodge.
Bear Lake county Soil Conservation Service technician Joe Rowsell returned from San Luis Obispo where he attended the western states training center at California Poly Tech. Instructors covered engineering agronomy range and wildlife with night courses in toastmastership and extemporaneous speaking. Tours included recharge reservoir creation and watershed drainage district projects. Participants believe the session will improve their work.
Mr and Mrs Smith Gertsch recently bought the Emma Grayton residence and moved in early this week after several weeks of renovations including painting and plumbing The couple lived in their previous home for over 25 years and look forward to making the new house their brighter, larger home.
The Idaho Hospital Association plans a two day convention in Boise on October 21 and 22. Hospital administrators from across the state will attend at the Hotel Boise, said Mrs. Irene Oliver president from Magic Valley hospital Twin Falls.
Ann, the young daughter of Mr and Mrs Taft P Budge, had an appendectomy at Bear Lake Memorial hospital last Saturday. Reports say she is expected to return home today.
Funeral services were held at the Paris First Ward chapel for Elizabeth Collings Maughan Nye a pioneer woman active in education in Bear Lake Valley and Fielding Academy. Born May 14 1877 in Logan Utah she rose from a rural upbringing to teach home economics at the Utah State School for the Deaf and Blind in Ogden and to lead LDS deaf work. She died October 12 in Ogden and is survived by daughters Mrs. Lawrence Austin of Ogden and Mrs. William Nye of Paris.
The St Charles Relief Society will hold a bazaar on Saturday October 26. Readers are asked to keep the date open as further announcements of the plans are made in the coming week.
Fielding High School Spartans lost 31 to 13 against Montpelier Bears in a last game of the season. Flu and injuries hampered Fielding as Glen Passey returned a kickoff 70 yards and Douglas Price scored on a 65 yard interception run. Coach Boothe, ill with the flu, attended but limited.
The 31st All Idaho Congress annual meeting will be held in Boise at Hotel Boise with topics on Idaho agriculture and a tribute to the business man of the soil. General sessions in morning and afternoon are open to the public.
Elizabeth Nye returned from a funeral sermon by Henry Van Dyke and taught home economics at Fielding Academy in Paris for two years. She married Joseph E. Nye on June 12, 1912 in the Logan Temple and they raised four children. She led Relief Society and Primary services and served on the Bear Lake Stake board before ill health forced her resignation.
William Richard Bee born August 29 1884 died October 11 at his Bloomington home after a lingering illness. He was a farmer, husband of Alta Thornock and father to William G Bee Donna King Lillis Bunderson. survived by one brother Archie and eight grandchildren. Funeral October 14 in Bloomington ward chapel with a series of speakers and musical tributes.
Idaho’s pheasant season starts at noon October 26 in the southern five counties, with northern areas opening October 19. Regulations outline boundaries and general rules. partridge and quail seasons run concurrently where open. The feature notes the ringnecked pheasant’s elusive, challenging nature and hunting lore.

Jack B. Parson Construction Co of Smithfield Utah awarded the five mile twenty mile? wait 5.178 mile Highway 30 C project from Montpelier to Bennington. Bid $680 764.50 was lowest from ten bidders. Project includes roadway drainage structures and plant mix bituminous surface with completion set for September 15 1958.
Bear Lake County will test 4400 head of cattle for tuberculosis this year, covering all dairy herds. Three veterinarians Dr McCoy Dr Harris and Dr Costello will conduct inspections across the county with county agent Robert D Kerns calling for full dairy cooperation.
The Fielding High School PTA meeting scheduled for Monday was canceled as schools and public venues closed due to a flu epidemic. Next meeting date to be announced by secretary Beatrice Sleight.
