The Bear Lake Soil Conservation District partners with Soil Conservation Service technicians to aid farmers. They study soils slopes and erosion to prepare individual plans including crop rotations, residue use, land leveling and water management to conserve soil and boost forage.
A small log building on the vacant John Rogers property in the northeast part of town burned Saturday afternoon. The fire siren sounded and the department arrived to find the structure fully engulfed. Water suppressed the blaze leaving only charred frame remains. authorities cited children playing with matches as the probable cause.
District Judge Isaac McDougal of Pocatello sentenced Thomas and Raymond Smith of Fish Haven after a Sept. 9 cattle rustling arrest by Sheriff Alton Bunderson. Both pleaded guilty with lawyers O. R. Baum and D. E. Haddock. Thomas received a 1 to 15 year term, commuted to 1 year plus $60 restitution. Raymond’s 1 to 15 year term was reduced to four months in jail with a stay of execution until Nov. 9 for start of sentence.
Sherman Lowe presented interesting facts on the Wonders of Modern Medicine at Emerson gym with a Liberty quartet providing musical touch during the Wednesday evening program.
Farmers with conservation problems are urged to apply for assistance through Bear Lake Soil Conservation District Supervisors. Board members are Wm. J. Hunter Silas L. Wright Eldon W. Cook Jesse Orchard and James Hymas. The aid costs farmers nothing and comes from the Soil Conservation Service to aid in penance and restoration of natural resources.

Fielding High Spartans were thrashed by Montpelier Bears 55 to 0 in a Friday game. Montpelier jumped to a big lead, while Fielding failed to mount offense, repeatedly turning over on fourth down deep in their own territory. This marked Montpelier’s eighteenth straight year of either beating or tying Fielding. Fielding closes their season Monday October 12 in Paris against Grace.
Pfc. William H. Stell of Paris Idaho received his discharge at the Camp Cooke California separation center. Stell served in the 13th Armored Division known as the Black Cat under General Patton in Germany. The unit fought 20,000 German prisoners in the Ruhr and 19,000 more in Bavaria and Austria before advancing toward Austria. The division later captured Braunau Austria and released 14,000 Allied POWs. Redeployment to the Pacific was halted by Japan's surrender ending the European war.
Staff Sergeant Marvin Felk of Georgetown Idaho, Bronze Star recipient, attends Shrivenham American University in Shrivenham England as the second term opens with over 4000 soldier students. SAU offers 360 courses in eight departments run by the Army Information and Education division for personnel awaiting deployment or occupation duty.
Residents cleared a foot of heavy wet snow from streets on Wednesday morning as warmer temperatures kept the pace steady. Crews worked through Tuesday into Wednesday night to reopen roads and ensure access.
Mrs Jean Hart arrived Wednesday from Logan and is staying with her parents Mr and Mrs Clarence Rich. She believes her husband is on his way home from the Pacific.
A wartime correction states T/5 Deval Bunn is son of Mrs Jey H. Bunn and that Corporal Bunn is the brother of Mrs. Cra gun rather than Conan Cra gun.
A C-47 transport with 26 Army and Navy personnel made a forced landing at Bear Lake County Bear Baker Airport in heavy sleet. Lt. David Clowers said fuel was low after flying from Sacramento to Denver then Ogden and Reno in severe weather. Sheriff Alton Bunderson and Sheriff Hanson guided the plane to the airport with car spotlights, enabling a safe touchdown despite zero visibility.
Pfc. Alvin R. Parker of Ovid Idaho, with the 96th Division, receives the Bronze Star Medal for bravery on Okinawa Island. He led a patrol to evacuate wounded under heavy enemy fire, risking mortally dangerous exposure, and also holds the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge.
The 136th Bearcat Infantry Regiment of the 6th Army assisted Nanao residents on Honshu after 250 Chinese laborers rioted post-occupation. Private Angus Porter of Paris Idaho recalled arrival, dignitary introductions, baths, silk attire, and a ceremonial Japanese meal before the unit stabilized the city and hotel.
Mrs Almira C Stauffer and her husband were sent by train to Onega Kansas for funeral rites. Relatives from Logan and Ogden met the train Friday night. Mrs M H Collings and Mrs Beth Collings accompanied to attend services. The Collings party visited Brigham before returning home.
Passengers departed earlier on Tuesday by bus and train to their destinations. The three crew members remained with the ship and will fly it back to Hill Blaid as soon as weather conditions are favorable. A load of gasoline arrived Tuesday afternoon from Ogdem for the plane.
Memorial services were held in Montpelier for Private First Class Glen R. Seewer 23 of Montpelier who died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Telegram from Marine commandant A A Vandergrift notified his parents Mr and Mrs Carl Seewer that Seewer died April 10 1945 from tuberculosis at Kakeno Homa camp near Tokyo.
Funeral services for Mrs Presley Floyd were conducted by Bishop Amos Robinson of Laketown with the Laketown Relief Society Choir assisting. The Floyd family plot was honored in St Charles cemetery and many community members attended the service.
The fish and game commission announced a November 15 closing date for Bear river in Franklin county. The closure, requested by conservation officers and sportsmen, aims to boost next spring catches while other Bear river sections remain open year round with local exceptions. Bear Lake in Bear Lake county stays open until December 15.
Utah Power and Light announces first time access for Idaho and Wyoming users. A 55 mile rural line from Dingle to Border Wyoming brings electricity to Bear Lake County communities including Geneva Raymon Aiton Alton and Pegram. About 60 homes gain electric pumps lights and farm machinery with two step voltage regulators installed near Dingle and Border.
Mr and Mrs Keith Chase and family of Layton Utah visited the D C Rich home from Wednesday to Friday. Mrs Gwen Passey accompanied them back to Layton for an indefinite stay.
