Saturday May 13 marks the grand opening of the Paris Cafe under new owners Mr and Mrs Merlin Gleed who took over the Hotel Paris Coffee Shop two months ago. Open house will offer coffee or orange juice for adults and ice cream for children. five steak dinners will be given away in the afternoon with music and redecorated interiors on display.
Idaho's Alpine 4-H camp opens May 8 with about 100 boys arriving for a week long Conservation camp chaired by T. J. Chester. Activities run through late August with projected attendance rising. Caribou and Bear Lake Counties join sessions July 10 to July 13.
The Fielding Chapter PTA will hold a meeting Thursday at 8:00 p.m. at the High Baboo. The program includes student reports and special numbers.
Wesley T. Maughan Rich County Agent receives a one year Adult Education and Community Development fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Madison starting September 1 1961. He takes sabbatical from Utah State University and two years unpaid leave. He is a Lava Hot Springs Idaho native and a US Navy Seabees veteran with a Utah State degree in Vocational Agriculture.
The City of Paris publishes its annual expense estimate to guide the coming year’s budget. The publication invites public examination of the figures to be approved at a future hearing. Time and place for the Budget Hearing will be announced later.
Round about the town reports visits and guests across Logan, Soda Springs, Montpelier, and surrounding locales. Families and friends attend track meets, dinners, and church events with attendees from Brigham City to Salt Lake City, Idaho Falls, and Pocatello.
The report notes speed as a key factor in Idaho’s one vehicle deaths, cited in about two thirds of such crashes through early 1961, with a rise in speed-related fatalities nearing 90 percent in mid 1960s data. By April 1961 the state logged 50 fatal wrecks, with 56 deaths from four months in 1960 and 81 fatalities this year. Police emphasize radar enforcement and public campaigns, while motorists view speed enforcement as interference to personal rights.

Mrs. Christena Peterson returns home after a week in Montpellier visiting the Everett Peterson family. The Study Group gathered at Darrell Sorenson's home with Wayne Johnson in charge. Ground breaking in Logan drew Russell Sorenson Mitchell Beck and their wives. Theology lessons and teachers' messages featured in Relief Society with 16 ladies present. Hazel L. Peterson led nursery duties for four children. A drag line cleaned upper and lower ditches in town. Mia Fondell Shockey and Johnny of Idaho Falls visited Catherine Johnson for her 87th birthday on May 4. relatives called and long distance calls arrived from Theressa Rich and Atahna Anthony. Shockeys and Charles Shockey attended. Max Johnson underwent major surgery Friday. Alfred Rogers hosted Alfred Rogers in Paria on Sunday. Mr and Mrs Fred Shockey and Catherine Johnson hosted dinner Sunday for Hermene Joha nn. Mrs Charles Parker and Mrs Raymond Dinick celebrated Mrs Parker's birthday with guests. On April 23 the Garden City Stake Relief Society presidency visited the Sacrament meeting and reorganized the Relief Society. The outgoing president Maxine Calder was sustained. Beatrice Hanan Phyllis Findlay and Marie Weston named work director with Theord Hodges Aston Boence and Leone Loveland as teachers. Beatrice Cook sustained as organist and Ano Hansen as secretary.
The Bear Lake group enjoyed a Monday banquet with partners in attendance. Business was discussed including the upcoming Fourth of July celebration. Improvements have been made on the Chuck Wagon and committees are organized to improve this year’s event.
The Paris Second Ward Sunday School presents a Mother's Day program on Sunday May 14 at 9 o'clock in the L D 8 chapel. Songs by Junior Sunday School members talks by Vicki Pugmire Kevin Kulicke Rhea Wallentine Steven Hoge Jean Budge and others plus a girls chorus vocal duet and recitations by Junior Sunday School members.
The FBLA hosted the annual FHA fashion show in the Fielding High School auditorium. Parents are invited to attend the event.
Kirk Hansen son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Hansen of Paris underwent major surgery at the Montpelier hospital on May 1. He is now home and doing fine.
City of Paris Idaho presents the fiscal year budget covering May 1 1961 to December 31 1962 detailing expenditures for waterworks streets and walks street lights cemetery department police services city hall and more. It includes audits dues insurance bonds social security taxation costs and maintenance of facilities as certified by Mayor and City Council on May 1 1961.
Senator Frank Church urged Idaho youths seeking appointments to U S service academies to apply by June 2. Examinations by the Civil Service Commission in Idaho's major cities will be July 10 for West Point Annapolis and Colorado Springs options. Applicants may also seek national exams for Kings Point and the Coast Guard Academy.
Senator Frank Church said Idaho farmers received 96 million dollars from beef sales in 1960 down from 110 million in 1959. He cited USDA figures showing 496 million pounds of cattle and calves marketed in 1960, a record year for U S meat production at 51.3 billion pounds nationally. Idaho sheep and lambs yielded 103.1 million pounds for 16.6 million dollars, hogs 38.8 million pounds bringing 6.7 million, with 14 million cattle and calves on hand January 1, 1960.

Senator Frank Church joined Senator Warren Magnuson in seeking funding for the U S Forest Service to buy five Idaho access timber roads at an estimated 260000 dollars. The move would open large timber stands for sale, following Washington state purchases last year that unlocked seven billion board feet for marketing.
Dr. Richard J Delorit announces Allen Stephens of Paris has been accepted for the NSE program at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. The institute for high school teachers in agriculture and science runs two sessions June 18 to July 8 and July 10 to August 5 with about 60 students from 16 states. Stephens, a Fielding High School teacher, will attend the first session funded by a $40 000 NSF grant and study biology concepts and recent advances in agricultural sciences.
The U S Civil Service Commission invites applications for a new exam to fill supervisory Farm Service roles in the Prison System. Jobs pay 2 62 to 3 75 per hour across penal facilities nationwide and in the District of Columbia.
Camp Elizabeth Passey of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers met April 27 with 21 members and four visitors. A trio title Green Cathedral was performed by Jean Piggott Karen Hymas and Linda Hart. Other items included a Romance piano solo and a discussion on Mormon in San Bernardino. Next meeting is May 25 at Verona Stevens home.
Today May 11 Montpelier Motor Hotel hosts Dr H H Scarborough noted Lake City eye specialist offering eye exams. He has long served the area and can handle difficult eye cases inviting residents to attend for services this day.
Linda Minson daughter of Mr and Mrs Clifford Minson ranked among the top ten typists at Stevens Henager College Ogden during recent tests. Students were rated on typing speed and accuracy. She is enrolled in a secretarial finishing course and has received many honors for her work this term.
