Bear Lake County Farm Bureau will open a new office by the Schmid building at 941 Saturday in Montpelier. The opened office will run Monday to Friday from 5 p m and all day Saturday with Bureau services available.
Willard G Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Willard Johnson of Ovid, is in a 12 week rendarmen course at the 9 Naval School in Norfolk. Upon completion, he will be qualified to serve on highly skilled information center teams on ships. He is a graduate of Field High School class of 1957.
Paris Lions finish first in the Outlaw Basketball Tournament on March 19 defeating Soda Springs Lions to win the top prize. Awards name Mel Clark and Darwin Pitchford among top players, with teams including Preston Native Lumber Bancroft Randolph Grace Mustangs Monsanto Cokeville Georgetown Montpelier and St Charles.
The Mary Ann Payne family gathering brings 28 immediate descendants of Mary Ann and the late Samuel Payne to Truman Payne and his wife in Montpelier for his birthday. Attending with him are Mr and Mrs Raymond Payne of Brigham City Mrs Jd Bevans of Eugene Oregon Mr and Mrs John Payne of Paris Mr and Mrs Orson Spencer and Mrs Emma P Krogue of Bloomington and Mrs Mary Ann Payne.
Fish and Game officials discuss using planes and lookouts to count Rocky Mountain goats, noting that helicopter counts are local and trend-based. They emphasize the goats’ grouped, stable habits and the need for year to year consistency in monitoring to understand population and condition.
The Bear Lake Soil District in coordination with Charles Crawford starts the fourth annual Conservation Poster contest from March 24 to April 23 for grades five through eight. Posters must reflect conservation of natural resources, with cash awards for top four finishers and special certificates. Services available to teachers include the Soil Conservation Service Extension Service Idaho Fish and Game Department and the U S Forest Service.
Local Draft Board No. 17 of Rich County Utah reports registrants in service and those called for April. Names include Cardon Willis Glen Thomson Mark Cheney Reed Willis Marvin Cornin and others from Randolph Laketown Garden City Woodruff Lakota and nearby areas. A six month active duty program began May 1957 with notices given to all eligible boys.
The Idaho Fish and Game Department says 1958 fishing rules take effect April 1. Anglers should review changes and ensure they hold a valid 1958 license, as officers remind some have not renewed.

Mrs. A. W. Shepherd, a Paris businesswoman, was stricken by a heart attack early Monday in her home. Dan Rich a Fielding High School sophomore and Fielding FFA member will represent the Southeastern Idaho FFA District in the state public speaking contest in Boise March 27 28 29. He won the district contest March 6 at Montpelier with The Lifeblood of America on water conservation. He is the first Fielding contestant in the state finals since 1956.
A special leader training school is set for 1 30 p m Thursday April 3 at the Paris First Ward chapel. Bear Lake County Extension Service sponsors with Miss Marlene Stegelmeier, extension home agent. Nancy Haven of Salt Lake will teach four basic cookies for jar fridge or freezer. Leaders from 26 groups expected to attend the session.
Mr and Mrs Asa Athay of Paris announce engagement of daughter Lois to Robert Linnell son of Mrs Ruby Linnell of Lakewood California. Miss Athay a Brigham Young University graduate teaches in South Whittier California. Linnell recently served in the U S Navy and works with a pipe and construction firm in southern California. Wedding set for early summer.
The Camp Elizabeth Passey Daughters of Utah Pioneers will hold its regular monthly meeting at Mrs. Art Shepherd's home in Paris this Thursday afternoon. The event takes place on March 27 at 1 p.m.
A Fielding High School auditorium concert Monday March 31 at 7:30 p.m. features Emerson St Charles Bloom ington grade bands and Fielding High School band. The program includes grade band numbers, five selections by the high school department, two by the girls chorus, plus clarinet and trumpet solos and a brass quartet. Proceeds aid new band suits and dance band drums and prep for the Aberdeen festival on April 11.

Washington final action could trigger retroactive payments to widows and orphans of service members who died in WWII or Korea. The American Legion argues six months of military pay should not delay compensation and may push $7 000 to $8 000 per case, depending on rank. Bear Lake Post 84 says a public release will follow if the ruling goes in favor of the Legion.
A farewell testimonial for Wayne D Johnson of Ovid will be held at the Ovid Ward chapel next Saturday evening March 29 at 7 80 o'clock. He departs for a two and a half year L D S mission in the Samoan Islands and will enter the mission home in Salt Lake City on April 14.
Logan Canyon Cattlemen hear that 1959 and 1960 grazing will see reduced use under forest service action upheld by Supervisor R E Crowell and Ranger Owen DeSpa. Beginning 1959 a 20 percent reduction, with a 15 cent fee added in 1960, to curb deteriorating conditions. total reduction now 35 percent. The 1956 grazing agreement remains until its 1958 end. no stock cuts until 1959.
The Fielding Chapter of FFA elected officers on Tuesday March 25. Glade Booth was named president with Dan Rich and Glade Hymas as vice presidents Vernon Parker became secretary and Grant Morgan treasurer Craig Wallentine sentinel and Richard Ward reporter. The group travels to Boise for the state FFA convention through March 29 with former officers Sterling Wallentine Clifford Payne Vernon Parker Grant Morgan Glade Hymas and Richard Ward also attending as Boise trip participants. Glade Hymas served as district sentinel.
County voters approved a school bond proposal by the slimmest margin in a Tuesday election. A total of 2,198 ballots were cast with 1,482 in favor and 716 against for a 15 room elementary building and a vocational agriculture building in Montpelier.
The Idaho cancer control drive runs from April 1 through the month with volunteer crusade chairmen in each county. Philip A. Dufford of Boise, division president, announced a state goal of 150000. He cited volunteers’ work and progress in cancer research as motivation to reach the target.
Emerson PTA meets this evening Thursday March 27 at 8 o clock for a program on Childhood Diseases presented by Dr. Robert H Burgoyne of Montpelier. All members and friends urged to attend. Door prizes and refreshments will be served.
Idaho households bear about $14 each month to cover interest on the national debt. Senator Henry Dworshak warned Congress should curb spending and fix prior excesses before adding to the debt. He noted interest costs surpassed the entire 20 year old national budget and warned of an inheritance of crushing debt for children.
Idaho Fish and Game reports Idaho was 32nd in fishing licenses sold and 83rd in hunting licenses. California led fishing with 1,411,264 licenses while Michigan topped hunting with 1,250,004. Delaware had the fewest licenses, with 11,059 fishermen and 22,525 hunters. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan top fishing. New York over a million hunters.
