The FHS basketball team beat Bancroft 39 36 on Bancroft floor last Wednesday, but Bancroft won 31 27 at the Sub district tournament in Soda Springs Saturday night.
Idaho State College will host the second annual Southern Idaho Journalism convention on April 2. High school students can win two 50 scholarships for best sports and news stories and enter a radio writing contest. Caps and plaques will honor top high school papers and feature work, with entries due by March 20 to Professor Garets.
The Paris Town basketball team faces the Paris Lions club in a rival game Thursday at Fielding High School gym at 8:30 p.m. Admission charges are 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for grade school children. A preliminary inter mural boxing and wrestling championship bout starts at 7 o'clock and is free to the public.
Funeral services for Louisa Smedley were held Saturday afternoon in the Paris 2nd ward chapel with Bishop Taft P. Budge conducting. Interment was in Paris Cemetery with the grave dedicated by Asa Athay. The Smedley family expressed thanks for the assistance and floral offerings.
Ralph Roghaar visited Salt Lake City on Saturday. Mr and Mrs A W Shepherd drove to Logan on Wednesday. Dr Spencer H Rich visited Salt Lake on Tuesday. Paris area attendees joined a minstrel in Montpelier Saturday. Mira Clarence Rich confined at home with flu. Milford Passey and Ada Budge visited Logan and Conda. Lucille Rozzelle of Las Vegas and Georgetown mourn the death of Louisa Smedley. Arvilla Smedley traveled from Boise after her mother’s death. Bonnie Smedley of Ogden attended funeral services. Daughters of the Pioneers meet at Mrs Wm Stucki to raffle a quilt. Paris visitors attended Thayne cutter races. Standley Rich vacationing in Hawaii. La Ree Monson’s name omitted from Lions Club dinner list.
Lamont Heap of Thayne wins the grand championship in the All American Cutter Racing Association at Thayne Wyoming. He defeats the Chuck Little team of Rexburg to claim the season championship for the third straight year with the final race held Sunday.
Madison County’s first 1949 traffic fatality is the death of Mrs. Orlando Jensen 44 of Salem who died after an automobile train collision on U S Highway 191 near the Salem road junction. Jensen survived by husband Orlando Jensen and two daughters with funeral services in Rexburg.
The Bear Lake Cultural Arts association presents organist Roy M. Darley and bari tone Rulon Waite in a concert on Thursday night March 10 at the Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle.
Mrs Gladys Cleveland and Mrs Elaine Transtrum attended the funeral for their aunt Louisa Smedley in Paris Saturday. James N Transtrum attended an auto convention in Salt Lake Friday and Saturday, accompanying Mr Golden Michaelson.
The Bear Lake Stake holds its quarterly conference this Saturday and Sunday March 5 and 6. The first meeting at 6 30 p.m. in the Seminary Building serves all Church Welfare Committees from both wards followed by a Priesthood Leadership meeting at 8 p.m. Sunday sessions are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Elder Henry D Moyle and Donald D Davin will attend.
Fielding High School sent 31 students to a Pocatello weekend music clinic directed by Raymond Webb. Eight joined the clinic chorus under Archie Jones and 23 studied with Utah Symphony artists who later performed for 800 pupils in southeastern Idaho.
The Paris pavilion hosted the annual Gold and Green Ball with a three part floor show by 1st and 2nd ward members. Mutual Miss Diane Rich was crowned 1st ward queen with Bobbie Wilcox as her escort, and Little Miss Ann Chase carried the gold crown. 2nd ward queen Betty Dunn was crowned with attendants and train bearers named. Photos followed of the crowning by Mrs. Archie Shepherd and Sherman Lowe.

Carol Renee Keetch of the Oildale Bakersfield California area earned a Golden Gleaner Achievement Certificate from Vivian McConkie at the district MIA convention. The first in the California Mission to win the award she has deep roots in Logan Utah and has taught at Standard School in Oildale.
Congressman Compton White of Idaho warns that unrestricted yellow oleomargarine sales will end dairy farming in many regions and spur soil erosion. He urges a bill to ban oleo colored yellow and argues it would protect 2.5 million dairy dependent farms and soil conservation.
The Bear Lake Stage Lines started their regular run to Logan at noon Thursday. The bus resumes its regular schedule to Logan, leaving Paris at 11.50 a.m.
A group of ladies met at the home of Mrs Heber Price Friday evening to celebrate her birth anniversary. After social time, refreshments were served to Mesdames Martha Lewis Edna Bolton Leora Taylor Alvina Shepherd Verona Stevens Lucille Rogers Ruby Lewis Naomi Grandy Grace Smedley and Annie Price. Relatives from out of the valley attended the funeral of Mrs William Poulsen Tuesday afternoon and included Kenneth Poulsen John Morgan Ivan Peterson Farrell of Logan Myr and Mrs Lawrence Shepherd and family of Woods Cross Utah Mrs Myrtle Hansen of New York Mr and Mrs Oliver Williams of Preston Mr and Mrs William Jones of Pocatello Mr Hans Johnson of Shelley George Poulsen of Nyssa Oregon Wesley Collings of American Falls Mr and Mrs Clem Poulsen Aston Boehme and Perth and Keith Poulsen of Smithfield Utah.
The Fielding Spartans lost their first district tournament game at Bancroft Tuesday evening to Inkom by a score of 33 to 34. Earlier results on day one included Georgetown 35, McCammon 47, Aberdeen 57, Lava 32, Bancroft 44, Arimo 27, Rockland 34, Soda Springs 24, Grace 35, American Falls 52, and Fielding 33.
Fielding boxing and wrestling teams meet Box Elder of Brigham City next Wednesday evening March 9 in a program of varied matches. Admission 50 cents and 25 cents.
Fifty one whitetail deer from northern Idaho are moved to the Payette river drainage near Banks in a Pittman Robertson project. Federal aid coordinator Vernon Rich said the second release this week follows eighteen released last year as researchers monitor survival to gauge feasibility. Michael Throckmorton oversees the effort from Couer dAlene with federal and state funds.

Mrs. Williams Poulsen passed away at her home Friday morning after years of illness and six months bedfast. She was born September 15 1873 in Ovid Idaho and married William E. Poulsen November 11 1896 in the Logan Temple. Surviving are eight of ten children, twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Paris 2nd Ward Chapel with Bishop Clarence M Rich officiating.
