Pvt Darwin Arnell reported to Gulfport Army Air Field Miss for combat crew duty on the B 29 Superfortress. A Fielding High School Paris Idaho alumnus and former farmer, Arnell has served since April 1943 and is training as a Radio Operator destined for duty against Japan.

Used car ceiling roll-back cuts prices by four percent

The OPA announced a 4 percent roll-back on used passenger car ceilings effective July 1. A 1940 Chevrolet two door sedan drops to $778 from $810, reflecting current condition and the shift as new vehicle production resumes.

Phillip Shepherd son of Mrs Jhoun Shepherd a former Paris resident served as a paratrooper with the 46th Proht Bn. He flew nine combat missions over Italy from North Africa to Rome and southern France. He helped liberate Nice Cannes Antibes and Monts Cerio and earned the Purple Heart along with a Presidential Citation badge Good Conduct ribbon and TO Ribbon with 6 stars.

Local Idaho Soldiers Among Group Flown From Europe

Air Transport Command escorted a group of six Idaho soldiers into the states via Miami Florida for redeployment. The veterans include Cpl Arthur C Davis Malad with 34 months in the Mediterranean, Pfc Keith W Gunn 32 months in Germany with the First Infantry Division, T/4 Leo S Weaver Bennington 30 months in Europe with the 9th Infantry and Bronze Star, along with T/Sgt John A Knutson Namps T/5 Leslie W Scott Reubens and Pfc Jasper Thomas Rigby.

Irus B Hammond, supervisor for the Third Idaho Census district, announced preliminary 1945 census figures for Bear Lake County. Farms reach 731 up from 711 in 1940, with 986 007 acres total and an average farm size of 460 acres, subject to final corrections.

Pfc Arnell Earley Receives War Department Letter

War department letter sent to Mr and Mrs Walter Darley of Ganarkcap detailing Pfc Arnell Earley of the 7th Mountain Infantry United States Army earning meritorious service on April 17 1945 near Mt Serra Italy. He braved enemy fire to aid a BAR gunner, using rifle and grenades to neutralize a machine position and reduce further fire. Earley also held Bronze Star and other medals and ribbons.

Captain Legrand A. Pendréy of Paris, age 28, with the 10th Mountain Division on the Fifth Army front in Italy, earned the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious combat service. Commanding Company 187th Mountain Infantry, he halted an enemy ambulance and took 12 prisoners during an assault in a mountain valley.

Idaho Sets July Dates for Big Game and Bird Hunting

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission will set hunting and trapping dates for big game and fur in a Boise meeting on July 9. Alton R. Howell, Idaho Falls, commission chairman, to present recommendations from officers and sportsmen as five members determine seasons for 1945. Archery area designation sought by Dr. F H Konagy for a special zone. migratory waterfowl season not yet decided. Bow hunters already use bows in open seasons but lack exclusive areas. Season details to be finalized after winter and spring conditions are reviewed.

St Charles Soldier Gains Army Discharge 1106 Points

Funeral Services Held June 27th for Hyrum Hill

Funeral services for Hyrum Hill of Fish Haven were held June 27 in the Fish Haven ward chapel. Hill, born August 8, 1874 in St Charles Idaho, died June 24 at home after a long illness. He served as Justice of the Peace and in various local civic roles. survived by wife Sarah Elizabeth Thompson Hill, eight children, a sister, a stepdaughter, and fourteen grandchildren.

Sgt Dudley Cook Reported Killed in Action

Mr and Mrs L L Cook received word from the War Department that their son Sgt Dudley Cook was killed in action in the European theater on April 6. He had previously been listed as missing after a mission over Germany earlier in April.

Hannah Humphreys Celebrates 80th Birthday in Paris Ward

An 80th birthday party honors Sister Hannah J. Humphreys at her Paris home with many friends in attendance. The long-serving church member, born 1868 in Liverpool, lived in Utah and England, worked as a daytime Paris telephone operator, and devoted years to temple work and Relief Society leadership.

Bear Lake County Airport Dedication Draws Crowd

Several thousand attended the Bear Lake County Airport dedication on Wednesday last week. Army planes from Hill Field and ordnance from Logdon Arsenal were on hand, with sky acrobatics by A. L. Zimmerly delighting spectators. Aircraft on display included a B-24 and other craft under Capt. Arthur E. Smith, plus an A-20, a P-47 Thunderbolt, and transport planes. The event featured ordnance displays and a War Loan Bond rally, and was organized by the Montpelier Chamber of Commerce with support from Montpelier, Paris, and Bear Lake County. The governor sent congratulations via R. W. Beckwith. The weather was cold and windy.
