A Ben Franklin Era Post Service Deficit and Reform
Thrifty Benjamin Franklin reformed the colonial postal system which ran deficits, with losses of 678 pounds seven shillings two pence between August ISS and August 1756 and a later surplus of 2070 pounds 12 shillings 3 pence from 1761 to 1764. The piece argues against subsidies, noting business mail makes up most deliveries and urging self sufficiency as in modern times. It also references World War II era costs and a broad call for taxpayers not to bear postal deficits. It mentions 4-H and Future Farmers of America collecting soft samples in Idaho counties.
