Government study on grazing fees economy in western states
The Department of Agriculture and Interior study the influence of public land grazing fees on rancher incomes. Economists from land grant colleges compare current ranch costs and incomes with potential changes in grazing fees and livestock allowed on public lands across 232 million acres. About 45 000 ranchers paid fees last year for roughly 14 million cattle and 13 million sheep with millions of calves and lambs. Seventy five representative ranches, plus 700 cooperating ranchers, will be analyzed to model outcomes under fee or headcount changes.
